Item Agreeableness, low self-esteem, and academic competence in university students(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Fatima NazimThe purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between agreeableness, low self-esteem, and academic competence in undergraduate students was examined in the current study. Undergraduate students from various private and government institutions enrolled in various departments make up the population of interest. Correlational research design was used to identify the relationship between these variables and the participants were taken from the universities of Lahore. A stratified random sampling and convenience sampling were used to obtain the data in where 125 were males and 125 were females (N= 250). To provide an overview of the university students’ demographics, the mean age of males and females were calculated (M= 21.12). To measure agreeableness, low self-esteem, and academic competence, indigenous scales were used such as Big Five Inventory (Rehman & Johnson, 2019), Self-Esteem Scale (Zafar & Saleem, 2012), and Academic Competence (Jabeen & Afridi, 2019) scale were administered. Pearson Product and t test analysis were applied in the study. The findings of this study indicated the positive relationship between agreeableness personality traits and academic competence (r=0.28**) whereas the negative relationship between low self-esteem and academic competence (r= -0.17**). The results of this study have significant ramifications for university students, teachers, and mental health specialists. Intervention to help students improve their academic performance and self-esteem can be devised by recognizing the link between agreeableness, low self-esteem, and academic competence.Item Metacognition, interpersonal dependency and academic procrastination in university students(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Hafsa MoeenAcademic procrastination is an almost unavoidable problem faced by university students which can be disadvantageous for their academic performance. So, the study was conducted to assess the relation of metacognition and interpersonal dependency with academic procrastination and investigate its determinants. A correlation study design was used and a sample of 300 participants (males = 167, females = 133) was selected through simple random sampling. A demographic form, Metacognition Awareness Inventory (Schraw & Dennison, 1994), Interpersonal Dependency Scale (Nadeem et al., 2018), and Student Procrastination Scale (Mahmood & Subhan, 2015) were used for data collection. The results indicated that metacognition has a significant negative relationship with both interpersonal dependency and academic procrastination, while interpersonal dependency has a significant positive relationship with academic procrastination. It was also found that metacognition is higher in females than in males while no significant gender difference was found for interpersonal dependency or academic procrastination. Moreover, the joint family was found to be a significant predictor of procrastination. These findings indicate the significant role that metacognition and interpersonal dependency play in predicting the tendency of procrastination and provide evidence for stakeholders to alleviate academic procrastination in university students.Item Impulsivity, self-confidence, and procrastination in university students(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Syeda Rida ZahraThe purpose of the study was to find out the relationship between impulsivity self-confidence and procrastination in university students. Stratified sampling was used for conducting this study. Data collection was done from 200 male and female University Students in which 18-25 years old students participated. Scales which used for data collection were the Temperament Scale for University Students (Kazmi & Mehmood, 2018), the Self-Esteem Scale for University Students (Mehmood et al., 2012) and Student Procrastination Scale (Mehmood & Sara, 2015). Findings indicated that there was a positive relationship between impulsivity and procrastination whereas there was a negative relationship between self-confidence and procrastination. There was no significant gender, age, family and semester difference between impulsivity self-confidence, and procrastination. The study implied that it can help teachers of university to arrange workshops to reduce the level of impulsivity and increase the level of self-confidence in students. The study would benefit the administration of the university by working on the positive factors of these variables.Item Metacognition, emotion regulation, and interpersonal difficulties in university students(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Rabia NoorInterpersonal difficulties are one of the most prevailing problems nowadays in university students which eventually affect students’ cognition and regulation of emotions. This study was performed to investigate the relationship among metacognition, emotion regulation and interpersonal difficulties in university students. Correlation study design was used with a sample of 304 participants (females= 152, males= 152) were selected through purposive sampling. A consent, and demographic form, Metacognition Awareness Inventory (MAI), Emotion Regulation Scale for University Students (ERS) and Interpersonal Difficulties Scale for University Students (IPDS) were used for data collection. The findings indicated that metacognition has a significant negative relationship with interpersonal difficulties and significant positive relationship with emotion regulation, while emotion dysregulation has a significant positive relationship with interpersonal difficulties. It was also found that metacognition levels are higher in females than males whereas males have higher levels of unstable relationships than females. Moreover, students at private universities and BS have higher levels of metacognition than students at public universities and MS. These findings present the significant role that metacognition and emotion regulation plays in predicting interpersonal difficulties and delivers empirical basis for eliminating or reducing interpersonal difficulties among university students.Item Overprotective parenting, identity, and assertiveness in university students(UMT, Lahore, 2023) AyeshaThis research investigates the relationship between overprotective parenting, identity, and assertiveness in university students. Random stratified sampling was used in this research. Here, 300 male and female university students between the ages of 18 and 27 had participated. The scales used for data collection were Early Memories of Up-Bringing-Adult Version (Arrindell et al., 1991), Identity Scale for College Students (Ijaz & Rizvi, 2015), and Assertiveness Scale for University Students (Ijaz & Khalid, 2020). The findings indicated that there is a negative relationship of overprotective parenting with arrogant identity, social identity and independent identity. And arrogant-identity has a positive significant relationship with social identity, independent identity, assertiveness and self-regulation assertiveness. Those students who were in 4th years of the programs were more assertive than other years of university students. Men university population were more assertive than women university population. The implications of the research study is to help parents learn about various parenting styles and their effects, particularly how overprotective parenting affects a person's identity and assertiveness. The study's findings will captivate both clinical and non-clinical samples in a big way. Additionally, it will assist the therapist in changing the attachment patterns linked to parenting practices. The data was collected from public and private universities of Lahore. The participants were selected through random sampling (N=250). The scales used were, (i) Perfectionist Tendencies Scale (Masood & Naeem, 2016), (ii) Self-Concealment Scale (Jabeen&Javed, 2018) (iii) Student Problem Checklist (Saleem & Mahmood, 2011). The findings of Pearson Correlation reveal that Perfectionistic Tendencies have significant positive relation with Self-Concealment and Mental Health. The current research was done on cultural point of views and it is helpful in identifying the cultural manifestation of perfectionistic tendencies and self-concealment. The findings of this research would help to find the link between perfectionistic tendencies, self-concealment and mental health issues, to overcome the issues in academic and social aspect in future. Recognizing the adverse impacts of perfectionism and self-concealment, educational institutions can foster a culture of sound mental health and overall wellness in students. This effort can lead to the establishment of an understanding campus environment, enabling students to excel both in their studies and mental state. This research would contributes evidence based intervention that can help students to nourish their mental health.Item Helicopter parenting, resilience and emotional behavioral problems among adolescents(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Abdul QadeerThis research investigated the relationship among Helicopter Parenting, Resilience and Emotional Behavioral Problems in Adolescents. The data was collected from three to four schools in Lahore through stratified random sampling. The total sample was 300 students in which equal number of boys and girls were selected, furthermore stratum was made to collect data from equal number of participants. Three scales were used to collect data from the participants (i) Helicopter Parenting Scale (PHP) (Kshaf & Khurshid, 2020), (ii) Resilience Scale for Adolescents (RSC) (Rashid & Saleem, 2010), (iii) School Children Problem Scale (SCPS) (Mahmood & Saleem, 2011). The Pearson correlation analysis revealed that helicopter parenting has significant positive relation with emotional behavioral problems. Dominance and control; a factor of helicopter parenting has a negative relation with resilience. Moreover, emotional behavioral problems and resilience are negatively related. Linear Regression analysis revealed that class, gender, helicopter parenting-mother are the significant predictors of emotional behavioral problems whereas, resilience is the significant negative predictor. T-Test revealed that boys face more helicopter parenting. Girls face more emotional behavioral problems. Similarly, late adolescents face more emotional behavioral problems than early adolescents. Findings of ANOVA revealed that adolescents face emotional behavioral problems most. Following by, adolescents of fathers with undergraduate level of education face the emotional behavioral problems the most. The research is helpful from collectivistic cultural point of view. All the construct were studied under cultural context.Item Social connectedness, anxiousness, and academic self-esteem in adolescents(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Namra AjmalThe present study was aimed to determine the association among the social connectedness, anxiousness and academic self-esteem in adolescents. Cross sectional research design was used and sample of 350 school students from both public and private sectors of the Lahore (N=350) was studied. In study, testing of main hypothesis was done and measures included the Social Connectedness Scale revised version, Anxiousness Scale and Academic Self esteem Scale. Data was analyzed using SPSS 25 version. Findings of the correlation and regression analysis showed that social connectedness have significant positive relationship with anxiousness and there is no significant association found between social connectedness and academic self-esteem. Anxiousness is significantly negatively associate with academic self-esteem. The results of linear regression analysis depict that anxiousness is highly significant negative predictor of academic self-esteem. T-test findings indicated that girls scored high in anxiousness as compared to boys. Moreover, findings of ANOVA depict that there is no significant class difference found in social connectedness, anxiousness and academic self-esteem. The findings were discussed in Pakistani context.Item Family communication, coping styles and internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in adolescents(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Sheza JamilThe current study aimed to determine the relationship between family communication, coping styles, and internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems in adolescence. A sample of 300 adolescents (girls = 150; boys = 150), aged 11–19 years (M = 14.70, SD = 2.08) were recruited through stratified sampling. FCS was administered to measure family communication. CSS in Adolescents were used to measure the factors of coping styles of adolescents i.e., problem focused coping, emotion focused coping, spiritual focused coping styles. SCPS was used to assess emotional behavioral and social problems in adolescents. Correlation results indicated a highly positive association of family communication with problem and spiritual focused coping styles (p < .001), and a highly negative association with emotion focused coping styles (p < .001). Furthermore, there is a highly negative association of family communication with internalizing (p < .01) and externalizing (p < .001) behavioral problems in adolescence. In addition, emotional coping styles had a highly positive correlation with internalizing and externalizing problems (p<.001). Moreover, regression analysis revealed that gender, educational sector, family communication and spirituality focused coping styles came out to be significant negative predictors of internalizing behavioral problems while emotion focused coping styles came out to be significant positive predictors of internalizing behavioral problems. Similarly, educational sector and family communication came out to be significant negative predictors of externalizing behavioral problems while emotion focused coping styles came out to be significant positive predictor of externalizing behavioral problems. Results are discussed in terms of the manifestation of adolescents' problems in traditional and collectivistic cultures.Item Parental efficacy, interpersonal skills, and internalizing problems in adolescents(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Jannat FayyazThe current study aims to find out the relationship between the Perceived Parental Efficacy, Interpersonal Skills and internalizing problems in Adolescents. In this research correlational research design was used the sample was consist of 150 participants with 65 boys and 35 girls of age range 12-19 years. The data was collected through purposive sampling by using different measures including Perceived Parental Efficacy Scale for Adolescent, Interpersonal Skills Scale for Adolescents and School Children Problem Scale. The findings revealed that perceived parental efficacy was significant positive and substantial relationship with Interpersonal Skills, while School Children Problem Scale had a significant relationship with Perceived Parental Efficacy and Interpersonal Skills. This study has various implications, which are discussed in the light of cultural context.Item Perceived social support, resilience and psychological distress in diabetics(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Muhammad ShabaanThe purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between Perceived Social Support, Resilience and Psychological Distress in diabetic patients. The patients were taken from hospital and clinic settings. The. Correlational research design was used to identify the relationship between these variables and purposive sampling was used to obtain the data (N= 50). The present study comprised of demographic sheet, MultiDimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet et al.,1988). Resilience Scale for University Students (Khadim & Saleem, 2015), DASS-21. Pearson Product Correlation and Regression were applied to find the results of main hypothesis in the study. Findings of results shows that Perceived family support have significantly positive relationship with self-confidence while having significant negative relationship with Robustness and Psychological distress. Also results shows that Perceived family support have significant positive relationship with problem solving and psychological distress. Along with this findings indicate that perceived support from significant others have significant positive relationship with self-confidence but significant negative relationship with robustness, problem solving and psychological distress such as anxiety. In Pakistani Culture, the link between perceived social support, resilience, and psychological distress in diabetic adults has implications for culturally adapted interventions. Promoting family involvement, addressing stigma, and integrating mental health services can enhance well-being and coping strategies in diabetic patients. Also Future researches would explore incorporate family support, address stigma, and integrate mental health services to enhance wellbeing and coping in diabetic adults dealing with perceived social support, resilience, and psychological distress.Item Psychological manipulation, assertiveness and relationship instability among young adults(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Moniha NaeemThe purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between psychological manipulation, assertiveness and relationship instability among young adults. Data was collected from BS students comprised of 144 males and 156 females (N= 300). The Correlational research design was used to identify the relationship between these variables and strafed sampling was used to obtain the data. The present study comprised of demographic sheet, Victims of Psychological Manipulation Scale (Ijaz & Farooq, 2020), Assertiveness Scale for University Student (Ijaz & Khalid) and Relationship Instability Scale (Saleem & Mahmood, 2014). Pearson Product Correlation, t-test and ANOVA analysis were applied in the study. The findings of correlation stated that there is negative significant relationship between victims of psychological manipulation and assertiveness while t-test shows the significant results on demographics like, gender and family system. ANOVA indicated significant results with father’s education. This study will be helpful for future researches to know about awareness of psychological manipulation and how it effects the relationships. Findings on T-Test revealed that girls have more negative self-concept and face more emotional behavioral problems whereas, boys face more helicopter parenting. Similarly, late adolescents face more emotional behavioral problems while early adolescents scored high in negative self-concept. Findings of ANOVA indicated that grade 8th adolescents have most negative self-concept while grade 9th adolescents have most positive self-concept following by grade 10th adolescents who face most emotional behavioral problems. The current research is helpful in identifying manifestation of helicopter parenting in cultural context.Item Dark triad, self-concealment, and interpersonal difficulties in university students(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Fatima NiazPersonality and career preferences have been linked for a long time as a person's personality traits can have a significant impact on their career choices and job satisfaction. The main focus of this research was to find out dark triad personality traits, self-concealment and interpersonal difficulties in university students. For the study, 438 participants male and female (52.5%, 47.5%) were selected through stratified random sampling with the age range of 18-25 (M= 20.91, SD= 1.66), from business major (32%), law major (34.2%), and medicine major (33.8%). The measures consisted of short dark triad scale (Jones & Paulhus, 2014), self-concealment scale (Javed & Jabeen, 2018) and interpersonal difficulties scale (Saleem et al., 2014) and a demographic form. The research was conducted in different private and government universities of Lahore from March 2023 to June 2023. The study hypotheses proposed a positive relationship between dark triad traits, self-concealment, and interpersonal difficulties. Pearson correlation analysis supported a significant positive correlation between dark triad personality and interpersonal difficulties. Similarly, self-concealment showed a positive association with interpersonal difficulties. However no significant relationship was found between dark triad and self-concealment. Moreover, regression analysis suggested that self-concealment and dark triad were significant predictors interpersonal difficulties which shows that hiding of personal information from others may play a significant role in fostering problematic interpersonal relations. This study also highlighted significant finding of differences between scores on dark triad across the subjects of medical, business and law disciplines and ANOVA results revealed law students had more dark triad traits as compared to business and medical students. These findings have important implications for university students’ well-being and social functioning particularly in collectivistic cultures. Recognizing the presence of dark triad traits and self-concealment in students may help identify those at risk of experiencing interpersonal challenges and guide targeted interventions to improve social skills and emotional expression. Limitations of the study include the reliance on self-report measures, which might be susceptible to response bias, and the cross-sectional design that limits causal inferences. Future research should consider longitudinal investigations to examine the temporal relationships between these personality traits and interpersonal difficulties. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the importance of relationship between dark triad traits, self concealment, and interpersonal difficulties in university students. This would facilitate understanding of these dynamics for educators, counselors to create better psychological interventions to support students' emotional and social well-being, fostering a healthier and more positive academic environment in educational institutions.Item Illness perception, self-silencing and interpersonal relationships in medical and psychiatric patients(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Darakhshaan AshrafThe present study aimed to explore the relationship between Illness Perception, Self-Silencing, and Interpersonal Relationships in medical and psychiatric patients. A sample of 281 participants aged 20-80 years (M=47.14, SD =15.62) were included, with 157 (55.9%) women and 124 (44.1%) men. The data was collected through purposive sampling from both government and private hospitals and clinics in Lahore. The research design used was cross-sectional. Three measures were used in this study: The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (Broadbent, 2006), the Self-Silencing Scale (Ashraf & Saleem, 2020), and the Interpersonal Relationships Scale (Irfan & Rizvi, 2016). Pearson product moment correlation was applied to check the relationship between illness perception, self-silencing and interpersonal relationships in medical and psychiatric patients. The findings revealed a positive correlation between high self-silencing and negative illness perception. Additionally, negative illness perception was significantly related to unhealthy interpersonal relationships, while high self-silencing had a significant negative association with healthy interpersonal relationships. The result also showed that women have high self-silencing and more prone to negative illness perception. The findings of ANOVA depicted that psychiatric patient have high-self silencing whereas cardiac patient reported healthy interpersonal relationship as compared to diabetic patients and patients with primary education have also reported healthy interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, the results of linear regression analysis showed that disease, self-silencing, and illness perception were significant predictors of interpersonal relationships. Whereas, the study findings of illness perception, self silencing and interpersonal relationship has revealed that it is significant for awareness and psychological interventions as well as limitations and suggestions discussed in the light of collectivistic culture.Item Quality of life, perceived social support and depression in orthopedic patients(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Saliha TayyabHumans are social being who usually look for safe and secure surrounding to enjoy their live, but sometimes people go through such a tragic event which makes them physically and mentally unstable. The current study investigates the relationship between quality of life, perceived social support and depression in orthopedic patients. In this study a correlation research design was used, along with purposive sampling. The data was collected from both government and private hospitals of Lahore and total number of participants were 195. WHO Quality of Life Scale (Group, 1994), Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet et al., 1988) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995) were used as the measurable tools of this study. The statistical analysis such as Pearson product correlation, linear regression, T test and ANOVA were used to identify results. Findings of this study shows that there is significant positive correlation between quality of life and perceived social support and both these variables have significant negative correlation with depression. Quality of life and perceived social support were negative predictors of depression. The sub-analysis showed that males have more perceived social support as compare to females. Similarly, young adults have more perceived social support. Patient with more monthly income i.e., above 1 lac have good quality of life. Lastly, the people with longest duration of injury that was 1 to 5 years were more prone to depression or have depressive symptoms. The study will help to promote future researches in this area. Moreover, the linear regression analysis findings suggested that disease, self-concept, and illness perception are significant predictors of interpersonal relationships. It can be concluded that finding in collectivistic culture is significant for psychoeducation and managing psychological issues between illness perception, self-concept, and interpersonal relationships in medical and psychiatric patients.Item Illness perception, embitterment and interpersonal relationships in medical and psychiatric patients(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Nabeesha AhmedThe aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of illness perceptions (IP) with embitterment (ES) and interpersonal relationships (IR) in cardiac, diabetic and psychiatric patients. Data was collected from a sample size of 281 (N=281), adult participants, with age range 20 to 80 years old and mean of 47.14 and standard deviation of 15.62. The population comprised 44.1% men and 55.9% women. The data for the study was collected using purposive sampling from government and private hospitals and private settings in Lahore. Cross-sectional research design was used to study different categories of populations with respect to the combination of variables i.e., illness perception, embitterment and interpersonal relationships. Three different structured scales, Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (Broadbent, 2006), Embitterment Scale (Habib & Saleem, 2016) and Interpersonal Relationships Scale (Rizvi and Irfan, 2016), were used to collect the information from participants by using Pearson Product Moment correlation. The results revealed that negative illness perception has significant positive relationship with embitterment and unhealthy interpersonal relationship. Moreover, there is a highly significant negative relationship of embitterment with interpersonal relationship. It was hypothesized that negative illness perception has a positive relationship with embitterment and unhealthy relationships. Findings suggested that women are more embitter and have negative illness perception as compared to men. Moreover, there was more embitterment in joint family system. Relationships were healthy but had negative illness perception in nuclear family system. Patients with psychiatric problems have high embitterment. Cardiac patients show healthy interpersonal relationships but negative illness perception. Significant predictors of interpersonal relationship were disease, illness perception, embitterment and disease where disease and embitterment are the negative predictors while disease is a positive predictor. Results and suggestions are discussed in the light of cultural perspectiveItem Emotional neglect, identity and delinquent tendencies in adolescent boys(UMT, Lahore, 2023) Kashaf ArifThe objective of the study was to find out the relationship between Emotional Neglect, Identity, and Delinquent Tendencies in adolescent boys. For this purpose, data was collected from 300 adolescent boys aged 13-20 years from different private and government schools and colleges of Lahore, Pakistan. Culturally relevant measures such as Emotional Neglect Scale for Adolescents (Karamat et al., 2022), Identity Scale for Adolescents (Saleem et al., 2019) and Self-Reported Delinquency Scale (Naqvi and Kamal, 2008) were used for data collection. The results showed the mean age of participants was between 16 ± 2. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that Emotional neglect had significant positive relationship with Negative identity and Delinquent tendencies in adolescent boys meanwhile, it was negatively correlated with Positive identity. Regression analysis showed that joint family system, negative identity and emotional neglect were significant positive predictors of delinquent tendencies in adolescent boys. Participants from the joint family system had increased perception of emotional neglect. Boys from 1st year rated highest on delinquent tendencies as compared to others. The evidence suggests that adolescent boys perceive emotional neglect with increased sensitivity, and it has a significant influence on negative identity and delinquent tendencies. This emphasizes the need to explore this phenomenon further and its implications in designing effective preventative measures for delinquency.
