Abstract
The present study aimed to explore the relationship between Illness Perception, Self-Silencing, and Interpersonal Relationships in medical and psychiatric patients. A sample of 281 participants aged 20-80 years (M=47.14, SD =15.62) were included, with 157 (55.9%) women and 124 (44.1%) men. The data was collected through purposive sampling from both government and private hospitals and clinics in Lahore. The research design used was cross-sectional. Three measures were used in this study: The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (Broadbent, 2006), the Self-Silencing Scale (Ashraf & Saleem, 2020), and the Interpersonal Relationships Scale (Irfan & Rizvi, 2016). Pearson product moment correlation was applied to check the relationship between illness perception, self-silencing and interpersonal relationships in medical and psychiatric patients. The findings revealed a positive correlation between high self-silencing and negative illness perception. Additionally, negative illness perception was significantly related to unhealthy interpersonal relationships, while high self-silencing had a significant negative association with healthy interpersonal relationships. The result also showed that women have high self-silencing and more prone to negative illness perception. The findings of ANOVA depicted that psychiatric patient have high-self silencing whereas cardiac patient reported healthy interpersonal relationship as compared to diabetic patients and patients with primary education have also reported healthy interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, the results of linear regression analysis showed that disease, self-silencing, and illness perception were significant predictors of interpersonal relationships. Whereas, the study findings of illness perception, self silencing and interpersonal relationship has revealed that it is significant for awareness and psychological interventions as well as limitations and suggestions discussed in the light of collectivistic culture.
