Abstract
Academic procrastination is an almost unavoidable problem faced by university students which can be disadvantageous for their academic performance. So, the study was conducted to assess the relation of metacognition and interpersonal dependency with academic procrastination and investigate its determinants. A correlation study design was used and a sample of 300 participants (males = 167, females = 133) was selected through simple random sampling. A demographic form, Metacognition Awareness Inventory (Schraw & Dennison, 1994), Interpersonal Dependency Scale (Nadeem et al., 2018), and Student Procrastination Scale (Mahmood & Subhan, 2015) were used for data collection. The results indicated that metacognition has a significant negative relationship with both interpersonal dependency and academic procrastination, while interpersonal dependency has a significant positive relationship with academic procrastination. It was also found that metacognition is higher in females than in males while no significant gender difference was found for interpersonal dependency or academic procrastination. Moreover, the joint family was found to be a significant predictor of procrastination. These findings indicate the significant role that metacognition and interpersonal dependency play in predicting the tendency of procrastination and provide evidence for stakeholders to alleviate academic procrastination in university students.
