Abstract
Humans are social being who usually look for safe and secure surrounding to enjoy their live, but sometimes people go through such a tragic event which makes them physically and mentally unstable. The current study investigates the relationship between quality of life, perceived social support and depression in orthopedic patients. In this study a correlation research design was used, along with purposive sampling. The data was collected from both government and private hospitals of Lahore and total number of participants were 195. WHO Quality of Life Scale (Group, 1994), Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet et al., 1988) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995) were used as the measurable tools of this study. The statistical analysis such as Pearson product correlation, linear regression, T test and ANOVA were used to identify results. Findings of this study shows that there is significant positive correlation between quality of life and perceived social support and both these variables have significant negative correlation with depression. Quality of life and perceived social support were negative predictors of depression. The sub-analysis showed that males have more perceived social support as compare to females. Similarly, young adults have more perceived social support. Patient with more monthly income i.e., above 1 lac have good quality of life. Lastly, the people with longest duration of injury that was 1 to 5 years were more prone to depression or have depressive symptoms. The study will help to promote future researches in this area. Other than that, it will be helpful iv to raise awareness regarding the effect on mental health due to orthopedic injuries among both mental health professional and health professionals working in orthopedic area.
