Item PRISON ARCHITECTURE CENTRAL JAIL WITH REFORMATION CENTRE(University of Management & Technology, 2018) Azka Ahsan“A good first step forward is to start treating prisoners as human beings not profiting from their incarceration”, Sen Bernie Senders. Over centuries, the role of a prison has been that of a dark dungeon, implementing cruel punishments. This has not only made the crime rates go higher but has also destroyed innumerable lives. To counter this effect, numerous researches have been carried out in the modern world, some findings proving to be more effective than others, by significantly decreasing the crime rates. Although most of these researches focus on the human behavior and psychology, a very important aspect in human life is mostly overlooked. This aspect is architecture, which not only provides shelter but can also mold and alter human behavior. This research will focus on rehabilitation, through architecture, employing environmental psychology and therapeutic spaces and corrections through humane treatment of the prisoners while not compromising on security. Thus impelling them to not only mend their ways, but become responsible human beings, in the outside world.Item Sports complex Kohat(University of Management & Technology, 2018) Gul Afridi, M. AliSports are a source of national identity. Sports have a culture as well as social importance. It is basic nature of man to complete and excel from others. The word ‘old age home’ no longer defines a building where older people go to end their days. According to PERKINS EAST MAN Older people want homes that give them independence, choice and the ability to maintain their friendships and family contacts. They do not see their homes simply as a place where they receive health or social care. For architects and designers, and those who commission services, both general and specialized housing, present challenges when designing for care at home. General housing stock is not always fit for purpose and older people’s expectations of specialized housing have changed. And providers of social care are increasingly interested in creating inclusive, non-institutional environments, where residents retain control.Item VIVARIUM BIOSPHERE(University of Management and Technology, 2018) YOUSAF, AZKAUrbanization has greatly affect the natural environment .With the innovation of technology most people are attracted to machines .Whereas looking over the plant life that is a major part of eco- system on which the organization of world is based. If we look around, we will notice that plants are essential to maintain the balance of nature .Negligence to it can lead to destruction of our entire Biosphere .Every organism in this world, directly or indirectly, is linked with plants relying on it .This is why botanical garden and research center is a need for world where the tremendous environmental changes are affecting climate not only on global scale but on micro level also. Botanical Research center is a center dedicated to the plants researches only. Species of plants are taken into account and experiments are performed and botanical garden is garden with variety of plant species grown for the public awareness and vivarium in a wider sense is a botanical garden that is based on conservatory purpose. This project has been chosen in order to fill the space between nature and humankind. As we know Pakistan is enriched with fertile soil and taking the advantage of this blessing, there is more need as well as scope of botany related studies, So with help of new innovation, technologies and discoveries in botany could give rise to advancement in medical care units through different herbs, there could be more variety, could change architecture by designing plantation on building fronts. Our solution involves the construction of an Modern botany research center with hi-tech vertical green house, and a civic garden and farmers market to involve the local public which altogether make a platform where not only scientists works for the solution but also students, farmers and public contributes their part in this challenge of growing population with the demand of more food in less agriculture land. This will lead us to one anticipated long-terms benefits that would be the gradual repair of many of the world’s damaged ecosystems through the systematic abandonment of farmland. In temperate and tropical zones, the regrowth of hardwood forests could play a significant role in carbon sequestration and many help reverse current trends in global climate change. Other benefits of vertical farming include the creation of a sustainable urban environment that encourages good health for all who choose to live there; new employment opportunities, cleaner air, safe use of municipal liquid waste, and abundant supply of safe drinking water.Item Amal a village of hope(University of Management and Technology, 2018) Aieza Riaz KhanAMAL “A Village of Hope”. By giving them hopeItem KNOWLEDGE HUB.(University of Management and Technology, 2018) HANIF, AMIR"Technological innovations and digitization of resources have changed the traditional forms of library systems. Though these methods are eliminating the need for traditional structures, there is also an argument for the need of physical interaction with books and peers in the library. There still exists a strong support for books in the traditional form and the need for the ‘joy of reading’.” Libraries needs to be transformed as an active social space. A public library is just not a space to access physical and digital data but also create an environment to initiate interaction of people and exchange of ideas takes place among all people of diverse backgrounds and age groups visiting the library. Libraries are civic spaces where knowledge is circulated in all media. The systematic arrangement of the data, the reading spaces and the interaction with the librarian, derived from a user pattern enhance the user experience. There will be spaces where these functions overlap like the reception spaces, the large atriums and the reading halls where there is visual and physical connection with the other spaces providing a multi-generational experience. The play of natural light and the reading hall, the connection of the inside to the outside, formal and informal reading spaces, data collection (physical entities such as books, newspapers, magazines, is to computer rooms), provide a sense of volume to which the user relate, giving a dual experience to all kinds of people entering the library. Libraries also play a major role in providing literacy to the homeless, giving rise to knowledge societies.Item Fashion District(University of Management and Technology, 2018) Maryam KhalidPakistanis so rich in culture so as in fashion but internationally it has not been perceived as much about it. Pakistanfashion industry has no identity like Paris city of lights. When a person thinks about any country or nation the initial couple of things strikes its mind is its way of life, culture, architecture and local fashion. The area of Pakistanhas been attacked previously, possessed and settled by extensive variety of people, including Dravidians, Aryans, Greeks, White Huns, Persians, Arabs, Turks, Mongols and different Eurasian gatherings. There are contrasts in culture among the distinctive ethnic gatherings in issues, for example, dress, nourishment, and religion, particularly where pre-Islamic traditions vary from Islamic practices. The essential starting point of Pakistanis however originates from the human advancements of North India and eastern Afghanistan, with noteworthy impacts from Persia, Turkestan and Hellenistic Greece. There is immense change in textile of Pakistanthrough these ages which has not been recorded properly. Development and changes by the time in styles of clothes, equipment and techniques of craftsmen should be kept in archives and displayed in a way to represent Pakistan. On the other hand Pakistanbeing a producer of goods has raw materials, and all the talent like textile engineers, fashion designers, craftsmen and many more, all it needs is a place to gather them all at one place and make the best out of it. This could give a better chance for flourishing fashion industry internationally.Item HOME-GROWN POVERTY REDUCTION STRATEGIES THROUGH “SMALL SCALL COTTAGE INDUSTRIES” LIFE RETURNS TO ROHI (CHOLISTAN).(University of Management and Technology, 2018) Mehak Wajid AliTraditions represent a critical piece of our culture. They help form the structure and foundation of our families and our society. They remind us that we are part of a history that defines our past, shapes who we are today and who we are likely to become. Once we ignore the meaning of our traditions, we're in danger of damaging the underpinning of our identity.Item SARGOODHA UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, BHERA(University of Management and Technology, 2018) Muhammad SultanIf we observe there are many universities in the big cities like Karachi Islamabad and especially in Lahore. There are many educational institutes and universities but there is also a lack of these type of institutes in small cities and other areas of Punjab which are not well developed so that's why people from these areas have to travel towards big cities for the purpose of getting education. We must have to provide educational institutes and universities in small cities and towns and as well as these institutes can accommodate the surroundings and small areas which are related with other small cities and towns of Punjab.Item MULTIPURPOSE RECREATIONAL AND FITNESS CENTER FOR HANDICAPPED (PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED)(University of Management and Technology, 2017) ASIF, ROSHEENThis project (multi- propose recreational and fitness center for handicapped) will help to accommodate most of population of handicaps of Lahore to exercise their fitness and training to be fit in there route lives. InTgeneral, mental illnesses evenTthough are acknowledged as great contributors to the global burden of disease, they receive little attention at global, regional and local levels compared to other illnesses such as communicable diseases. The mental health care design in Pakistandeserves urgent attention. Whereas no recent study is done to examine the prevalent rate and treatment gap, the available data shows that 74% of mentally ill patients who require treatment do not receive it.Item Centre for juvenile delinquents(University of Management and Technology Lahore, 2017) Haider AliCriminal behavior in juveniles is hard to describe using a definition. Since no agreed definition can be found. But the anti-social acts and behavior of youngsters is often regarded as juvenile delinquency. Adulthood starts from 18 years of age and above, a person who commits a crime and is of or under 18 years of age is termed as a juvenile delinquent. Over centuries, the role of a prison has been that of a dark dungeon, implementing cruel punishments. This has not only made the crime graph go higher but has also destroyed countless lives. This report focuses on rehabilitation through architecture, employing environmental psychology and corrections through humane treatment of the prisoners while not compromising on security. Further, presents an insight in the conditions that prevail, and the number of juvenile prisons in Punjab, Pakistan. The data provides a detailed insight to the facilities provided, design patterns, security and counselling in the juvenile prisons. It further provides a proposed design for a juvenile prison to be built in Lahore, Pakistan. Juvenile schools or prisons lack in number in our country as compared to the crime ratio and they are important as the common incarceration of adults and juveniles together can lead to a greater chance of negative influence on the minors. Punjab has the highest percentage of juvenile offenders in the country and still there is not a single court dedicated exclusively to juvenile cases. Furthermore, there are only 2 juvenile prisons in Punjab which are long-standing and are least suitable for such facilities.Item A study of conservation issues of the Mughal tombs in historic city of Lahore(2017) Shahbaz, WajeehaArchitectural conservation is an important process for keeping alive the “identity” of a particular structure. Pakistan is a country of great diversity. Most of the monuments, buildings and sites are deteriorating with the passage of time. Lahore, the city of garden, is the core of Pakistan for its cultural and traditional background. Therefore, it is a representative of the entire country. Mughals Architecture is quite unique. Being poetic in nature, Mughals were always keen to learn about beauty and that is clearly visible in their designs too. The thesis gives introduction to Jahangir’s Tomb, Noor Jahan Tomb, Anarkali tomb, Zeb-un-Nisa Tomb, Prince Pervaiz tomb, Dai Anga Tomb etc. The selection of one Mughal tomb will represent the present condition of all other deteriorating tombs as well. Dai Anga tomb is the perfect example of a deteriorating historic structure, highlighting the issues of other tombs in Lahore. Tomb of Dai Anga was constructed by Mirza Sultan Beg. Dai Anga was wet nurse of Shah Jahan. Dai Anga tomb also has a gateway, gulabi bagh gateway. On the road to Shalimar, next to the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, on the left is the gateway to Gulabi Bagh and the elegant tomb of Dai Anga itself. For the purpose of study, the history of the site was studied. The site was thoroughly observed, measurements were taken and the plans were made. Horizontal and vertical arrangements of the tomb as well as the gateway were carefully measured. Listed status of the tomb was confirmed. Picturization of the present condition of the site, the tomb and gateway was done. The materials used on the external façade and interiors were studied and carefully observed. It was observed that the view of whole site is changed because of the construction of orange line train project. The tomb and gateway is in the worst condition, seems like it has not been conserved in ages. The fine fresco work and inscriptions of the Holy Quran are also not completely visible. The blue and yellow tile work and floral wall paintings have now faded away. There is garbage and dirty stuff all around the tomb which gives a very unpleasant sight. Some recommendations were given which include immediate repairs like maintenance of graves, walls and the floors. The brick work which is deteriorating from different places & the cracks need to be fixed as soon as possible otherwise the structure will fall apart. Renovation is to be done for the fresco work and the glazed tiles used for the interior and exterior of the building. The walls should be repaired throughout with Pucca brick laid in lime. The floral pattern used inside the building should be taken care of. Because of the orange line project, the entire site is covered with dust and debris. So this debris has to be thrown away. The two graves inside the mausoleum are made up of bricks which seem to be fallen apart from some places. These places should be properly covered in order to give respect to the graves. The mosaic tile work should be done on the whole façade in order to keep the structure in its original setting. Main colors for the whole decoration includes Black, Crimson red, green, blue and yellow, therefore these colors should be used.Item PRISON ARCHITECTURE CENTRAL JAIL WITH REFORMATION CENTRE(University of Management and Technology, 2018) Azka Ahsan“A good first step forward is to start treating prisoners as human beings not profiting from their incarceration”, Sen Bernie Senders.
