The office building is one of the great icons of the twentieth century. Office towers dominate the skylines of cities in every continent. As the most visible index of economic activity, of social, technological, and financial progress, they have come to symbolize much of what this century has been about. To accomplish this impact, the buildings must benefit from an integrated design approach that focuses on meeting a list of objectives. Through integrated design, a new generation of high-performance office buildings is beginning to emerge that offers owners and users increased worker satisfaction and productivity, improved health, greater flexibility, and enhanced energy and environmental performance. Typically, these projects apply life-cycle analysis to optimize initial investments in architectural design, systems selection, and building construction.Item ARTECH Institute for SEN Children(University of Management and Technolog, 2017) Arslan AkhterIt is a lonely existence to be a child with a disability which no-one can see or understand, you exasperate your teachers, you disappoint your parents, and worst of all you know that you are not just stupid.” –Susan Hampshire The straight fact is that the physically and mentally disabled in Pakistando not receive the support that would be common in a society sensitive and compassionate towards their disabled citizens. They are heckled, disrespect and pointed out as different by the population at large. Furthermore our public infrastructure does not incorporate suitable design features to aid the disabled in the public realm thus leaving them at the mercy of difficulties beyond those they are already facing. Worst of all, disabled children suffer greatly in their education due to inadequate facilities, incompetent teachers, deficient teaching methodologies and severely lacking awareness schemes for the general public. It is of utmost importance to address issues regarding the education of special children, not only for the children themselves but the ensure a healthy society and a sustainable economy. Reports by the World Bank, UNDP (United Nations Development Program) and UNICEF )United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) point towards the long term unsustainability of economic growth, unless strategic shifts are instituted to improve social sector performance. At the helm of their efforts is to establish and institute which will serve as the crown jewel of their efforts to counter the challenge of special children education. To provide these children with all the educational & training facilities to enhance their capabilities and rehabilitate them in the society.” Furthermore, it will set the precedent for the design of public infrastructure, which facilitates the disabled in the public realm. The project will be comprised of main school building, college facility, administration block, health center, hostel for children and staff members playing areas, training center etcItem Artech institute for sen children(University of Management and Technology Lahore, 2017) Arslan Akhter“It is a lonely existence to be a child with a disability which no-one can see or understand, you exasperate your teachers, you disappoint your parents, and worst of all you know that you are not just stupid.” –Susan Hampshire The straight fact is that the physically and mentally disabled in Pakistando not receive the support that would be common in a society sensitive and compassionate towards their disabled citizens. The land use of the city is in continuous transformation due to population increase and is expanding in south and south east directions through planned settlements. Land being an important resource accommodates the expansion and various activities within the residential areas of the city. Wapda town cooperative housing society is a planned public society located in the southern part of Lahore. Presently the situation of the society was not the same 15 years back. Transformation of land use is one of the issues, to be addressed immediately. Increase in land use change in residential areas and formation of main streets as a commercial street greatly affects in terms of increased neighborhood density and overloading the existing infrastructural facilities. This has questioned that how these transformations took place and what the strong factors behind this are. To find the solution to such questions it was therefore essential to analyze the structure and pattern of the land use changes. Neighborhoods are important for their residents; it has significant implications on neighborhood satisfaction which is affected by various factors of the neighborhood built environment. The impacts are usually felt by the people residing in the society. Therefore a correlation exists between the neighborhood built environment and its resident's satisfaction. The proposed area of research is the identification of factors causing land use change and their impacts on neighborhood built environment. The study mainly focused on the information obtained through available literature and data collected through physical surveys that enabled to explore the transformation of designated land use pattern of Wapda town cooperative housing society. It helped in selecting the main roads of Wapda town where maximum number of conversion was seen and identifies the causes of its conversion. A comparative analysis of residential and commercial property users has been done in order to evaluate the overall satisfaction level on physical, social and economic grounds through yeh's index of satisfaction. The study of users revealed that overall satisfaction level among residential property users lies in negative range whereas for users of commercial property give it a positive value. This indicates that economically the commercialization has created positive impacts however in this prospect, commercialization is causing detrimental impacts on environmental and social factors of the built environment. The findings suggest that policy makers should enact such laws which can strengthen land use management and maintain quality of life for the residents. Thus reducing the negative and adverse effects of property conversion and causing dissatisfaction among residents. To create a livable environment for the resident's, integration of physical, social and economic considerations by proper land use pattern must be maintained. Furthermore government should introduce an investment framework that encourages the building of shopping centers as well as apartments catering both the residential and commercial users. By doing so, they can provide more customized built environments; increasing residents' life satisfaction.Item MULTIPURPOSE RECREATIONAL AND FITNESS CENTER FOR HANDICAPPED (PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED)(University of Management and Technology, 2017) ASIF, ROSHEENThis project (multi- propose recreational and fitness center for handicapped) will help to accommodate most of population of handicaps of Lahore to exercise their fitness and training to be fit in there route lives. Since no agreed definition can be found. But the anti-social acts and behavior of youngsters is often regarded as juvenile delinquency. Adulthood starts from 18 years of age and above, a person who commits a crime and is of or under 18 years of age is termed as a juvenile delinquent. Over centuries, the role of a prison has been that of a dark dungeon, implementing cruel punishments. This has not only made the crime graph go higher but has also destroyed countless lives. This report focuses on rehabilitation through architecture, employing environmental psychology and corrections through humane treatment of the prisoners while not compromising on security. Further, presents an insight in the conditions that prevail, and the number of juvenile prisons in Punjab, Pakistan. The data provides a detailed insight to the facilities provided, design patterns, security and counselling in the juvenile prisons. It further provides a proposed design for a juvenile prison to be built in Lahore, Pakistan. Juvenile schools or prisons lack in number in our country as compared to the crime ratio and they are important as the common incarceration of adults and juveniles together can lead to a greater chance of negative influence on the minors. Punjab has the highest percentage of juvenile offenders in the country and still there is not a single court dedicated exclusively to juvenile cases. Furthermore, there are only 2 juvenile prisons in Punjab which are long-standing and are least suitable for such facilities.Item Entertainment complex(University of Management and Technology Lahore, 2017) Awais Ashraf, MuhammadItem BLUE SEA AQUARIUM (TO CONSERVE IS WHAT THEY DESERVE)(University of Management and Technolog, 2017) Abdul HannanIndian Ocean houses various types of marine life which is continuously facing extinction because of mass toxic wastes that are being drained into it. This disturbance in their natural habitat has already resulted in the extinction of many species that live underwater. The main purpose of this project is to generate awareness amongst the masses by showing them the beauty of the underwater world and creating live animal aquariums. A variety of species will be kept here including freshwater and saltwater species. There will be an auditorium which will showcase documentaries about how we are harming our nature and what we need to do to avoid it from happening. Also, a museum will be provided to educate people about the past ocean life which is now extinct.Item Baba guru Nanak University(University of Management and Technology Lahore, 2017) Ahmed BilalIf we observe there are many universities in the big cities like Karachi Islamabad and especially in Lahore. There are many educational institutes and universities but there is also a lack of these type of institutes in small cities and other areas of Punjab which are not well developed so that's why people from these areas have to travel towards big cities for the purpose of getting education. We must have to provide educational institutes and universities in small cities and towns and as well as these institutes can accommodate the surroundings and small areas which are related with other small cities and towns of Punjab.Item A study of conservation issues of the Mughal tombs in historic city of Lahore(2017) Shahbaz, WajeehaArchitectural conservation is an important process for keeping alive the “identity” of a particular structure. Pakistan is a country of great diversity. Most of the monuments, buildings and sites are deteriorating with the passage of time. Lahore, the city of garden, is the core of Pakistan for its cultural and traditional background. Therefore, it is a representative of the entire country. Mughals Architecture is quite unique. Being poetic in nature, Mughals were always keen to learn about beauty and that is clearly visible in their designs too. The thesis gives introduction to Jahangir’s Tomb, Noor Jahan Tomb, Anarkali tomb, Zeb-un-Nisa Tomb, Prince Pervaiz tomb, Dai Anga Tomb etc. The selection of one Mughal tomb will represent the present condition of all other deteriorating tombs as well. Dai Anga tomb is the perfect example of a deteriorating historic structure, highlighting the issues of other tombs in Lahore. Tomb of Dai Anga was constructed by Mirza Sultan Beg. Dai Anga was wet nurse of Shah Jahan. Dai Anga tomb also has a gateway, gulabi bagh gateway. On the road to Shalimar, next to the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, on the left is the gateway to Gulabi Bagh and the elegant tomb of Dai Anga itself. For the purpose of study, the history of the site was studied. The site was thoroughly observed, measurements were taken and the plans were made. Horizontal and vertical arrangements of the tomb as well as the gateway were carefully measured. Listed status of the tomb was confirmed. Picturization of the present condition of the site, the tomb and gateway was done. The materials used on the external façade and interiors were studied and carefully observed. It was observed that the view of whole site is changed because of the construction of orange line train project. The tomb and gateway is in the worst condition, seems like it has not been conserved in ages. The fine fresco work and inscriptions of the Holy Quran are also not completely visible. The blue and yellow tile work and floral wall paintings have now faded away. There is garbage and dirty stuff all around the tomb which gives a very unpleasant sight. Some recommendations were given which include immediate repairs like maintenance of graves, walls and the floors. The brick work which is deteriorating from different places & the cracks need to be fixed as soon as possible otherwise the structure will fall apart. Renovation is to be done for the fresco work and the glazed tiles used for the interior and exterior of the building. The walls should be repaired throughout with Pucca brick laid in lime. The floral pattern used inside the building should be taken care of. Because of the orange line project, the entire site is covered with dust and debris. So this debris has to be thrown away. The two graves inside the mausoleum are made up of bricks which seem to be fallen apart from some places. These places should be properly covered in order to give respect to the graves. The mosaic tile work should be done on the whole façade in order to keep the structure in its original setting. Main colors for the whole decoration includes Black, Crimson red, green, blue and yellow, therefore these colors should be used.Item NUST CAMPUS SIALKOT(University of Management and Technolog, 2017) Umair AftabAs a result of this project, the students would get better opportunity and access to higher education in an improved learning environment. They will in turn be able to contribute more positively in the socio-economic development of the country as a whole because Education in the largest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense, education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another. Education correlates with nation-build. Both of them complement each other. A nation cannot be built without education. With education, professionals are nurtured that will enhance nation-building. To continue to build nations, educate citizens, because education shapes the attitudes and behaviors and values of citizens. These are qualities that are needed for nation-building and it is only education that will bring those mechanics.Item Old age home culture say no, reality say yes(University of Management & Technology, 2017) Zaheer Butt, ZainabThe way we think about our living environment changes with age. The word ‘old age home’ no longer defines a building where older people go to end their days. According to PERKINS EAST MAN Older people want homes that give them independence, choice and the ability to maintain their friendships and family contacts. They do not see their homes simply as a place where they receive health or social care. For architects and designers, and those who commission services, both general and specialized housing, present challenges when designing for care at home. General housing stock is not always fit for purpose and older people’s expectations of specialized housing have changed. And providers of social care are increasingly interested in creating inclusive, non-institutional environments, where residents retain control.Item FARHANG-E-MUGHLIA THE CULTURAL CENTER(University of Management and Technolog, 2017) Zumar HayatIn order to enhance our culture, to properly use it, we need to accept it. A home of Kafirs. This is how people around Kalash refer to that beautiful place. Kalash is a lush green valley comprising of many more hidden valleys in it. It is a commonly known valley among the people of Pakistan, but very few know the traditional, religious, cultural and ethical norms of the people of Kalash. The life pattern of local people is worth viewing as they form a unique aesthetics of their living style. The people are disconnected from Chitral as well as major other parts of Pakistanand are facing serious threats because of being a minority in Pakistan. They live, work, eat, and drink, on their own inside the valleys of Kalash and form a unique living. A unique style of living is being practiced there since many years, and no new dimensions of life are known to this wonderful green historic valley. They celebrate in huge amount and gather a huge number of tourists from abroad and locally as well. They celebrate through festivals commonly known worldwide. Kalash in all the mix-up is lacking behind due to poor, facilitation and governance. Hotel star rating systems are widely recognized as the definitive way to ascertain a hotel's overall quality, but the rankings can differ wildly from one country to another. As it turns out, each country usually has its own way to rank hotels from one to five stars, established by a range of authorities, from tourism bodies to government agencies. But while there's no international standard that hotels across the world adhere to, stars do pertain to a hotel's level of service, amenities, cleanliness, location and price. Hospitality industry and is undergoing expeditious expansions. The aim of thesis project is to understand the technical function of a hotel complex. Its relationship with surrounding with emphasis on exterior setting in conjunction with interior view and outlook. Hotel provides regarding tourism, recreation, business etc. The city of Faisalabad is referred to as business heart of Pakistan. Welcome a lot of foreigner's business class for trading and other purposes. For this reason my motto is to provide luxurious accommodation and services to these users that they should not be deprived of having a hotel with standards facilities. Besides solving out the accommodation problems I have an opportunity to solve problems in hotel design and create interesting forms and good views through natural and built environments.Item Castle in clouds(University of Management and Technology Lahore, 2017) Majeed, AmmaraIn this era of chaos, unemployment, inflation what should be the role of an architecture student? It is never too hard to bring light, color and play in the buildings we design but that is not the only thing we need to do. What we all need to do is to create something that brings attachment, bondage and emotions with the architecture. It should not just give employment but should be a new charming activity that would motivate, relax, encourage the youth to think beyond reality and come up with new creative ideas. Pakistan needs to create architectural attractions. The only thing we lack is the forum for recreational activities. It not only creates revenues but also gets fame if it is of an international standard. We living in Pakistan soul totally promote our culture. But we also need to bring new ideas regarding architecture to start working in a new direction on which the whole world is moving. Every country has theme parks for which they are famous. The culture of theme parks should also be promoted in Pakistan because we do not have a single proper theme park. The theme park industry around the world is growing day by day. So we need to step up and move in the league of finding fun in architecture as designers. This thesis explores the possibility of designing a Disneyland park, where people can relax and enjoy the themes, which is being evolved from mythical stories of Disney movies. Moving through an environment is a visual, spatial, sequential experience. Architectural determinism is a theory which claims that built environment is a theory which claims that the built environment is the chief determinant if social behavior. It says that design can control behavior, that architecture can limit and channel behavior in a predictable manner, supported by Adolf Behne when he asserted“you can kill a man with a building just as easily as with an axeItem “REVIVAL OF BASIC SURVIVAL INSTINCT”(University of Management and Technology, 2017) SIDDIQUI, SIDRAThe advent of agriculture has ushered in an unprecedented increase in the human population and their domesticated animals. Today, over 800 million hectares is committed to soil-based agriculture, or about 38% of the total landmass of the earth. It has re-arranged the landscape in favor of cultivated fields at the expense of natural ecosystems, reducing most natural areas to fragmented, semi- functional units, while completely eliminating many others. A reliable food supply was the result. Modern agriculture employs a multitude of chemical products, and exposure to toxic levels of some classes of agrochemicals (pesticides, fungicides) have created other significant health risks that are only now being sorted out by epidemiologists and toxicologists. As if that were not enough to be concerned about , it is predicted that over the next 50 years, the human population is expected to rise to at least 8.6 billion, requiring an additional 10 hectares to feed them using current technologies, or roughly the size of brazil. That quantity of additional arable land is simply not available. Solutions are already being applied in other developing countries like China, Switzerland, Malaysia Netherlands and so on but not yet even introduced in Pakistan. Scientists in Pakistan are still on basic research and busy in recording the consequences of urbanization on agricultural land instead of working on solution to cease the growing global food problems. Moreover in Pakistan there are not enough research centers where Think tanks can work together to find the better solution for the problem. Our solution involves the construction of an Modern agriculture research center with hi-tech vertical green house, bio-mass department and a civic garden and farmers market to involve the local public which altogether make a platform where not only scientists works for the solution but also students, farmers and public contributes their part in this challenge of growing population with the demand of more food in less agriculture land. This will lead us to one anticipated long-terms benefits that would be the gradual repair of many of the world’s damaged ecosystems through the systematic abandonment of farmland. In temperate and tropical zones, the regrowth of hardwood forests could play a significant role in carbon sequestration and many help reverse current trends in global climate change. Other benefits of vertical farming include the creation of a sustainable urban environment that encourages good health for all who choose to live there; new employment opportunities, cleaner air, safe use of municipal liquid waste, and abundant supply of safe drinking water.
