Although significant no. of researches exists on construction labor productivity issues in other states, but unfortunately, a very low no. of studies has addressed productivity issues in Pakistan. So, being a developing country, issue of labor productivity is equally important to projects located within different cities of Pakistan. The objective of the research is to explore the factors that affect the productivity of construction labor according to the viewpoint of Engineers and contractors working at different construction projects. A questionnaire based survey was conducted by involving respondents from the various construction departments i.e. government, semi government and private sector to categorize factors that affect negatively construction labor productivity in the various construction projects in the various cities of Pakistan. Construction labor productivity is affected by an assembly of factors. However, the analysis shows that the main factors responsible for low labor productivity are poor labor motivation; improper supervision; tool and equipment issues; unfavorable working environment at site; craftsmen issues; lack of training and facilities for Labor; poor safety measures at site; bad weather conditions; low wages and late payments; noncompliance of safety rules by labor.Item Analysis of the competencies factors of it project managers on project success(UMT Lahore, 2019) Muhammad KashifIn today’s world, projects are considered to be one of the pivotal parts in a company or any business as various companies rely on the projects. Thus, as importance indicates, project management is one of the necessary tasks. To manage the projects, project managers play the most essential role. However, one cannot find an agreed definition of a project manager, its importance or necessity. Besides, many IT companies do not clearly define the criteria for selecting a project manager but tend to focus on the technical skills rather than their managerial competencies. One of the main reasons for the project failure is the lack of effective competencies and skills in a project manager, mainly effective communication and leadership. In this study, a quantitative analysis is performed to analyse effect of competency factors of an IT project manager to complete a project, successfully. Moreover, the extent of the effect of these factors/skill upon effective IT project success is analysed. The research is based on quantitative analysis of competency factors. For this purpose, questionnaires are sent to project managers and coordinators to get filled. Based on the responses of questionnaires, the analyses are performed in SPSS and results are collected. On the basis of results, it was observed that the relationship between the competency factors and project success was very strong as evident from coefficient r of value 0.993. Moreover, the importance of the competence of the project manager is important and that knowledge is accepted as the most important followed by skill and experience. The results also revealed that the project completion time is the most important factor for project success, followed by cost and quality. Furthermore, it was observed that the competence of the project manager is closely related to the success variables of the project and finally the close relationship between the project manager's competence and the project success is present.Item Institutional environment & its impact on project performance-an investigation on construction firms in lahore, pakistan(UMT Lahore, 2019) Syeda Mehreen KazmiConstructions industry in Pakistan is considered important with regard to its economic development also for creating employment opportunities and social ties. Due to the significance of CPEC in Pakistan, construction industry has experienced the dramatic boom in the economy over last 2 years. In project’s performance the role and concept of Institutional Environmental Factors has been extensively studied in previous literatures. However, the analysis of these strategic constructs in construction firms has been very limited. Still, there’s a gap present on the topic of institutional factors with regard to project performance, this paper aims to address this gap. In this research, I posit that Institutional Environmental Factors (IEFs) may have impact on performance of the construction projects also there may be some factors that can impede or promote the performance of these projects. A sample of some construction firms’ management teams was gathered through questionnaires and using semi structured interviews. Study results suggested that coercive & normative factors of institutional environment have significant impact on the project performance with respect to time delays and cost escalation whether mimetic factors have lessen impact. This study also tries to assimilate the importance of institutional factors with the policy making aspects of construction firms which can affect the performance of the projects. Future implications and limitations of the study are also discussed.Item Leadership competencies and success of transport infrastructure projects of lahore:(UMT Lahore, 2019) Abdul Ghaffar RanaInfrastructure advancement reflects its key role in financial and socio-economic progression of Pakistan. Project execution and accomplishment majorly depend on the leadership competencies. The dynamics of leadership define the influence of a leader i.e. project manager in lead on his team to complete any type of project and make it a success. The objective of the study is to investigate the influence of project managers’ leadership competencies in light of theory explaining “The Competency School of Leadership” coupled with specific project type on project success outcomes for transport infrastructure projects. A structured questionnaire-based survey was conducted to collect data using purposive sampling from individuals that are currently or have been involved in recently completed projects in transport infrastructure development of Lahore. A total of 152 useful responses were returned. Findings obtained using moderated regression analysis using Andrew Hayes ‘process’ technique suggest that leadership competence of project managers is insignificant for successful completion of the projects under a particular project type. Results suggest that the project managers in leadership position when effectively and efficiently utilize their competencies of intellectual strength, managerial procedures and emotional balance for successful actualization of transport infrastructure projects. Moreover, it has been found that project managers in these projects exhibit efficacious leadership competencies that are substantial without regard to any project type in certain for their successful completion.Item Software development life cycle:(UMT Lahore, 2019) Usman Saleem Khan; Bisharat Ali; Uzair Mueen; Sana Miraj; Fatima FirdosHuman Resource Information System (HRIS) recognizes as one of the important element of any organization. Many types of research have been done in the software industry side but no emphasis has been done between the project manager’s characteristics and project success. As a project manager is the team lead and guides the team members to achieve success in different projects. In my study, we have used the NEO-FIVE-FACTOR model to check the relationship between the project manager personality and project success. Like the relation between Openness to Experience (OE) and Project Success (PS), Extraversion (E) and Project Success (PS), Agreeableness (A) and Project Success (PS), Conscientiousness (C) and Project Success (PS) and Neuroticism (N) and Project Success (PS) in software industry of Pakistan. In my study, I did convenience sampling in different software houses like NEXT BRIDGE, ILSA INTERACTIVE, FOLIO 7, ADSELLS ADVERTISING, STEWART PAKISTAN, etc. Data were collected through questionnaires from 150 project managers from these software houses of Lahore. The correct and acceptable questionnaires were 135. After data collection, I had applied different tests for reliability and validity of my questionnaire and check the assumptions which are necessary for this study, after that, I had applied multiple regression analysis to check the strength of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. It is clear from the result, the personality traits that have a significant positive impact on Project Success in the software industry of Pakistan are Openness to Experience and Extraversion. While other traits like Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Neuroticism have no significant impact on Project Success. From the literature, I have studied that Openness to Experience has a significant positive effect on project success. It is necessary for the software houses to hire those project managers who have the personality of openness to experience because the software development process is quite hectic and that needs a lot of knowledge about the changing technologies. This can only be done when a project manager has the personality of exploring and learning new things and this will increase the success level of the projects. Similarly, studies showed that Extraversion has the significant positive impact on project success and my study also tells that in Pakistan there is positive relationship of openness to experience and extraversion to project success and conscientiousness, agreeableness and neuroticism are also the important traits for project success but my study tells that they have no significant impact on project success.Item Exploring the challenges faced by it companies of pakistan and their impact on software exports(UMT Lahore, 2019) Atif RehmanLast decade has seen extravagant increase in exports of Pakistan’s IT industry which lead the country’s economy to progress as well. However, according to the current statistics Pakistan remain short to its benchmarked target due to numerous reason which are yet to be explored. Therefore, the present research focused on the exploration of the factors that are creating hindrance for the increase of IT exports. In order to have more elaborated, reliable and valid results, the present research has followed mixed approach by focusing on the qualitative and quantitative method. Data was collected from people holding key decision makers (Managers, Directors, CEO’s, etc.) from IT companies in the selected population. The data was collected through purposive sampling in the form of focus group interviews and survey forms (manual surveys and google forms) from eight and 323 participants respectively which than analyzed by using QSR-NVIVO for thematic analysis, cloud map, frequency list and word tree, while, SPSS was used for factor analysis of the survey forms. Qualitative results presented that access to client, quality development, legislation, timely project completion, learning with in organization, process management with in organization and research and development orientation are the major factors restricting the IT industry’s progress. On the other hand quantitative results also promoted the quantitative results by presenting 12 factors that require consideration for the progress of IT industry’s export.Item Project delays in multifaceted offshore software development(UMT Lahore, 2019) Bilal AliIn the modern IT world, more and more IT projects are done by global teams. The primary aim of these companies is reduced cost. While offshore development has many benefits e.g. reduced cost, talented resources, standardized processes etc. it also includes new challenges e.g. communication, coordination, trust, cultural and knowledge transfer issues. These challenges not only affect the development process but also affect the overall project execution and hence leading to unwanted delays. Companies have been focusing on the major challenges in general. However there has been little effort put to collect and document whether different types of offshore models encounter similar types of challenges. Using the systematic literature review approach and applying customized search criteria based on the research questions, this thesis evaluates the challenges faced in each type of offshore development. As a result, this thesis has identified that each type of offshore development model faces its own challenges and its framework is different from the other. Also through synthesis, it is observed that there is variation between the delay factors for each offshore development model.Item A Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MS Project Management at School of Professional Advancement(UMT Lahore, 2019) Muhammad Zaheer AhmadAlthough Pakistan is a rich country in natural resources but the provision of skilled labor for the industry is essential for its prosperity. Success of construction projects is generally evaluated on the basis of in time completion, within allocated cost, and achieving required quality standards. In this research I evaluated that relations between different factors with the success of construction industry projects. Like relation between consultant performance (Competency & Experience, Availability & Quality of Drawings, Cooperation of site staff, Verification of Bill and Issue & Dispute Avoidance) and project success & relation between Contractor’s Employees Satisfaction (Compensation & Reward, Career Development, Job Security & Workplace Environment) and project success in construction projects in Lahore area. This research is based on the survey of 3 construction projects based on traditional procurement method to acquire the success feedback regarding performance of consultant and satisfaction of contractor employees in Lahore region. Which included IKAN Engineering Services Pvt ltd, DESCON Engineering & FABCON Engineering). In this research I used convenience sampling for data collection. From past literature review, the project success factors and their indicators are adopted. In this study we collected data from 130 respondents from the above mentioned industries and applied different tests for the reliability and validity of instrument, after that used multiple regression analysis to evaluate the strength of relationships between above mentioned factors. Before apply multiple regression analysis, I also checked the all assumptions which is necessary for this operation. Procedure the result got form the multiple regression analysis, it has clearly communicated that the impact of Cooperation of site staff, Availability & Quality Drawings and Verification of Bill & Issue in consultant performance on the project success of the construction projects in Lahore area is looking significant, as its beta value are percentage of 14.5%, 22.2%, 22.8% The impact of Career Development & Workplace Environment in Contractor’s Employees Satisfaction on the project success of the construction projects in Lahore area is also looking more significant, as its beta value are percentage of 27.6% & 14.4%. The Others factors like Competency & Experience and Issue & Dispute Avoidance in consultant performance and Compensation & Reward and Job Security in contractor employees satisfaction has no significant impact on the on the project success . The beta value are 0.072 & 0.081 and -0.024 & 0.079 accordingly. Which is showing very less ratio of impact on the project success. Finally, the approach of this research is useful to the clients and engineering consulting firms for identifying and improving on their weak areas to enhance the quality of services for their contractors.Item Exploring software adoption factors in construction companies for managing projects Ms thesis(UMT Lahore, 2019) Muhammad Mohsin IsmailEvery year’s considerable quantum of construction business undergoes in Pakistan, however the consistent decrepitude in Construction industry is extremely surprising, the survival of the construction firms operating from many past years is becoming serious challenge. However, few new firms have been flourished due to their perpetuated hard work and inclusion of the updated softwares in accomplishing the works of Construction Project. As change takes its time to occur therefore the Construction Industry including the Stakeholders felt scar in adopting the new state of the art softwares in having the construction project works. Mostly the ownership of the Construction Firms bearing no technical degree in engineering, they generally have inherited business of construction and comfortable with the traditional set of strategies in completing the Construction projects due to many prospective aspects. Computer Softwares are vital in achieving the swift completion of the Construction projects, it is well known to the Firms executives but the confidence level, trust lacking and requirement from the Public clients distant it in adopting the construction related softwares in completing the Construction Project. The endurance of service of the trustworthy employee and expertise level also a considerate status quo mainly hindering in adopting the softwares for having construction works. The availability of skilled staff and speedy turnover during the ongoing construction projects shakes the confidence of the firms’ executives not to employee the services of the Computer interacted staff hence previous circumstances remains valid. The Construction firms who have adopted the use of the Construction softwares may play substantial role in shifting the ancient model of construction firms to the softwares interacted environment by consistent mentoring at peer level.
