Item Role of higher education in peace-building and strengthening national institutions(GUNI - Global University Network for Innovation, 2008) Salman Saeed QureshiItem Gaps in management education: a case study of university of management and technology(2010) Abdur Raouf; Rukhsana Kalim; Ahmed F. SiddiqiThis paper aims to identify the gaps in management education highlighted by 3 primary stakeholders: students, faculty and alumni. The study tries to address the issue of relevance and compatibility of management education and investigates areas of improvement perceived by respondents. The paper assumes that business departments of universities have to bring changes in learning strategies to meet the requirements of stakeholders. This research takes UMT (University of Management and Technology) as a case study and presents gaps in management education. Data are collected from all the 3 stakeholders: students, faculty and alumni of MBA (Master in Business Administration) program offered at UMT. The survey is administered using an exclusively-designed research instrument and the data set of 211 students, 55 faculty members and 145 alumni is analysed using appropriate statistical techniques. The management of business schools should develop an integrated and well-coordinated mechanism to share common vision and strategies among stakeholders. A need to revise current MBA curriculum is identified, which emphasizes on the development of different types of skills among MBAs to make the program compatible with the existing corporate sector. The universities dealing in management education are recommended to redesign their curriculum in a more integrated and coordinated way in anticipation with aspiration of the existing corporate sector, which would then help reduce the identified gaps among stakeholders. The management of business schools should have a continuous assessment mechanism incorporating the feed back of all stakeholders, particularly students, faculty and alumni. The paper makes a fruitful contribution to the existing academic literature through an empirical investigation in Pakistani environment. A critical discussion is carried out, and gaps in management education are highlighted, which may motivate management institutions to revise their curriculums.Item Essentials of quality in higher education teaching assessment(2010) A. S. HaiderAbstract not availableItem University ranking model: depicting teaching quality as a critical factor(Australian Quality Forum(AUQF), 2011, 2011) Salman Saeed QureshiGlobal university ranking systems rely heavily on research output and research quality just like it does on reputational surveys. During the last two decodes, universities have shown more inclination to hire PhD faculty members having sound research credentials. This global effect of over-reliance on research has actually undermined the actual spirit of teaching and learning. Consequently universities are more concerned with their prestige compared to what they actually contribute in teaching and learning. Similarly employers and policy makers rate ranking, prestige and reputation of university on top. Research output is so much publicized in universities that it shadows actual teaching quality. Teaching and learning aspect is over-shadowed by research in almost all global ranking systems. How much difference a university creates starting from admission of students till graduation is generally missing in measurement of academic quality by ranking bodies. Dill and Soo (2005, p. 507) have argued that 'Empirical research suggests that the correlation between research productivity and undergraduate instruction is very small and teaching and research appear to be more or less independent activities '.Astin (1996) notes that research and teaching have negative correlation as substantial time is consumed in research activities, and as a result sufficient time is not given to students for teaching and advising, commitment to student development, use of active learning techniques in the classroom. Following a constructive critique on two main global ranking systems, this paper suggests a university ranking model which is likely to provide more realistic picture of university quality.Item Comparative analyses of PSO and BP regarding sustainable business(London Research Syndicate, 2011) Ahmed Nawaz ZaheerBased on the rising social and political pressure regarding sustainable development of corporations, sustainable business is getting a more and more significant issue for the business management. To control the sustainable development of a corporation it is essential to assess the performance for benchmarking purposes or to monitor the developments over time .The paper is based on comparative analyses of British petroleum (BP) and Pakistan State Oil (PSO). In this paper the sustainable strategies are observed of these two companies and provide a model how PSO cam adopt BP sustainable business strategies and also applied to assess the sustainability performance of the petroleum majors in Pakistan. The purpose of this paper is to develop a business model for an organization which can effectively promote and support sustainable business practices in the Petroleum industry, particularly to the extent that these practices contribute to sustainable regional development overall. The purpose of this paper is to make a business model that will serve to build Sustainable business capacity to promote and support sustainable business practice in Pakistan .The results indicate that PSO is not segmenting their target markets based on the consumers' environmental attitude. Findings also indicate that green market strategies differ for each company and must be derived from a company's individual circumstances including its objectives, resources and competitive advantages. Furthermore, the findings show that most companies can implement green changes in their marketing mix but that these should only be actively promoted when a product's green attributes constitutes a key selling point. Finally, the findings indicate that financial benefits, and the possibility of gaining a competitive advantage, are the foremost incentives for implementing green measures.Item Agricultural information needs of Pakistani farmers(Malaysian Journal of Library & Information Science, 2013) Muhammad Asif Naveed; Mumtaz A. AnwarThis study aims to identify information needs of 84 Pakistani farmers. The study uses face-to-face structured interviews of men, between the ages of 25 and 65 years, actively participating in farming. Their information needs were centered on: soil preparation, seeds, taking care of crops, harvesting activities, and animal husbandry. They depended mainly on interpersonal relationships in meeting their information needs. The role of mass media and printed materials as sources of information was found to be very low. Lack of timely access, low level of education and language barrier were the main problems that these farmers faced while getting the required information. The findings of this study would be helpful in planning and designing need-based information infrastructure for rural farmers. This will add to the existing literature on the topic and will be of help to researchers in developing countries of Asia and Africa.Item Understanding rural farmers information behavior(Rice Plus Magazine, 2014) Muhammad Asif NaveedIndeed, farmers have an inevitable need for information to perform their daily farming activities efficiently and effectively. The information concerning improved agro-technologies created by agricultural scientists should be disseminated in a way that is compatible with, and results in the farmers’ satisfaction. Agricultural production in Pakistan is quite lower than its potential in spite of the hectic struggle by the agriculture departments and other allied agencies. It may have various reasons. Farmers’ lack of awareness of the current agricultural information and technologies is one of the major reasons for low agricultural productivity.Item Leadership style, culture and commitment: an analytical study of university libraries in Pakistan(DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2014) Muhammad Rafiq Awan; Khalid Mahmood; Haroon IdreesThis study aims to find relationship of leadership style of Chief Librarians, with organizational culture and employee commitment in university libraries in Pakistan.
