Abstract
This paper studies the impact of critical success factors and mediating role clarity on project success of construction projects in Pakistan. Construction industry has been on rise globally and the trend in Pakistan is no different. The construction projects need extensive care, planning and good project management practices in order to achieve project success. This paper identifies the role of critical success factors on project success under the mediating role clarity. The study carries out empirical quantitative research on fifty construction projects mentioned in Annual Development Report based in Lahore. The theoretical model is constructed using the insights of Social Exchange Theory which forms the basis of this research. The data is collected using two-sourced data collection from top and middle management of the projects. The statistical analysis performed on a sample data set of 287 individuals show negligible impact of critical success factors (as a whole) and role clarity on project success although the individual analysis of each success factor with project success showed that institutional environment had significant impact on project success. A new framework for future research is presented at the end of the study. The results obtained from the study would help academicians and practitioners of industry to focus on various factors and the recommendations would help for future research and observation.
