    Sufism
    (UMT, Lhr, 2019) Muhammad Saad
Background: While it is sometimes misunderstood as a sect of Islam, Sufism is a broader style of worship that transcends sects, directing followers’ attention inward. The Sufi practice focuses on the renunciation of worldly things, purification of the soul, and the mystical contemplation of God’s nature. Followers try to get closer to God by seeking spiritual learning known as tariqa. Sufism is a mystical form of Islam, a school of practice that emphasizes the inward search for God and shuns materialism. It has produced some of the world’s most beloved literature, like the love poems of the 13th-century Iranian jurist Rumi. Its modern-day adherents cherish tolerance and pluralism, qualities that in many religions unsettle extremists. Inspiration: In this modern world as everyone is so busy in his life and believes that money, possession, physical comfort, and many more that happens are more important than the spiritual value of life. We forget that what happens to us is not because of our ideas and plans but are our rewards as god blessings. Our egos make us imagine that we are the cause of action. We need to control our arrogance and vanity because what God gives us he can also take away in a flash. As Sufism teaches that we can see beyond the veils of darkness which envelopes our belief systems. One who sincerely devotes himself or herself to a program of Sufi training may eventually approach the state where one can “see things as they truly are” when one can “worship God as though you can see Him”, and when can truly realize that one is “in the world, but not of the world”. For many people in the modern world, it may seem that such teachings are alien to their culture or are a thing of the past – if indeed they ever existed! Others may instinctively recognize that their destiny lies in the unfolding of these teachings in their lives, but are faced with overwhelming difficulties in finding a trustworthy and authoritative teacher who can show them the way out of the darkness. Being healthy does not imply to show happiness. Happiness can be defined as a state of mind free from anger, sorrow, fear, that wealth cannot purchase. For example, in this materialistic world man money and time also to spend the time according to his choice. On one side he may enjoy what he wants in his life as he spends money according to his choice but on the other side if he passes through some kind of tension, at this particular stage he will face total failure even if he spends a lot of money. At this particular stage, we become more spiritually mature, and the desire for god increases. The inspiration of my thesis is the idea that I wanted to have a closer look at Sufism and dig a little deeper to my extent and try as a lot of beautiful patterns and compositions can be created once we jump into it. Whirling dervishes and Arabic quotes have always fascinated me and I want to bring it all out on the fabric. Sufism is a pure and deep form of love which according to me should be praised, also by bringing it more into life by connecting design and art and different sorts of embellishments to it. Objectives of the Project: The main objective is to create patterns and compositions inspired by mysticism. The aim is to use my experience developed throughout my degree program and use my skills in developing Page 9 of 60 beautiful designs and work with them to explore my creativity to the utmost. Countless textile patterns can be created using this inspiration for making these patterns. Sufism has an extremely strong impact on society and the viewer as it draws them towards spirituality. Sufism has a striking and impressive look as it makes you feel captivated and cozy at the same time. The thesis will involve: • Firstly, developing designs using digital and manual textures and patterns. Basic preparation and color management will be done. • Secondly, colors most prominently used will be bold as in shades of maroon, black, and beige. • Thirdly, the patterns will include Arabic writings and whirling dervishes. Plan of Work: My work will include a step by step procedure that will be both concept and research-based. After carrying out the research I will develop research boards and mood boards for my theme that will include various inspired Sufi patterns. A color palette will also be developed. Then I will do initial sketching for motif and pattern development. Repeat patterns and other methods will be used for design creation. Further, the colour application will be done. Both, Photoshop and manual design development techniques will also be used; which includes the use of mixed media techniques for the manual purpose. All the work will be displayed from portfolios to end products in a display session. Expected Outcomes: All in all, the eventual product line creation will visually highlight the inspiration gathered from already existing Sufi scriptures or art. I will communicate my idea through my product range and self-expression for the fulfilment of my thesis aims and objectives. The scope of my work will help protrude my idea of mystical designs. Expectantly, prints will be developed for home furnishing. A wide range of prints will be produced for home textile products, for example, sofa, lampshade, and cushion prints. As a result, Sufism influenced designs will emerge as captivating yet cozy and contemporary home textile products.

    The Roman Grandeur
    (UMT, Lhr, 2019) Zainab Khalil
Background: The Greeks thought of their gods as having the same needs as human beings, they believed that the gods needed somewhere to live on Earth. Temples were built as the gods' earthly homes. The basic design of temples developed from the royal halls of the Mycenaean Age. A Mycenaean palace consisted of several buildings often more than one story high, grouped around a central courtyard. It was brightly painted, both inside and out. In each palace, there was a large hall called a megaron, where the king held court and conducted state business. Little remains of the megaron at Mycenae. This reconstruction is based on the remains from other palaces, which would have been similar. The Romans also added a lot of details and decorations to their temples. The Romans also made what became the very common round, domed temple. The Classical Period Temples became much larger and more elaborate. Parthenon, one of the most famous structures ever, was created during that period. The Greeks held many religious festivals in honor of their gods. The purpose of festivals was to please the gods and convince them to grant the people's wishes. Such as making the crops grow or bringing victory in war. In addition to religious events, athletic competitions and theatrical performances took place at festivals too. Roman architecture was unlike anything that had come before. The grandeur of their buildings, though, was largely external. Buildings were designed to be impressive when viewed from outside because their architects all had to rely on building in a post-and-lintel system, which means that they used two upright posts, like columns, with a horizontal block, known as a lintel, laid flat across the top. Roman architecture differed fundamentally from the tradition because of the discovery, experimentation, and exploitation of concrete, arches, and vaulting. From the first century C.E. Romans were able to create interior spaces that had previously been unheard of. Romans became increasingly concerned with shaping interior space rather than filling it with structural supports. As a result, the inside of Roman buildings was as impressive as their exteriors. Inspiration: The influence and impact of Roman architecture are seen the world over, whether in the designs for large, imposing buildings or in the infrastructure that supports almost every city in the world. If a city has roads and bridges in it, then it was in the strictest terms, influenced by Roman architecture. Returning to the roots of iconic architecture, and the use of innovative construction materials. I am highly inspired by the groundbreaking work of Roman architects, and the endless versatility of the materials they created. I am inspired to work on this theme for my thesis because the idea of taking a deeper look into the beauty of Roman Architecture fascinates me to an extent enough for my interest. I like architecture when involved with textile or surface designing. The beautiful buildings and mosaics of Roman Architecture derive my interest in making countless patterns and compositions. I shall make motifs out of buildings’ exterior and will also be using the interior of the buildings and convert them into textile prints and embellish them with the best of my skills learned over the course these four years into my degree. Objectives of the Project: The main objective is to achieve brilliance in making architectural prints. As it’s a vast theme, I would cover the interior and exterior both into my prints. I will try to explore my creativity to the best of my level and I shall create as many patterns and motifs as possible. Countless textile prints can be created using the elements of Roman Architecture that will help relive the warmth and overwhelming feel of the evergreen Roman Era. The work shall be based on the following:  The patterns will include the interior and mostly exterior of the architecture.  Colors most prominently used will mostly be earthly tones with a combination of different bright colors according to the architecture.  The watercolor effect will be used in the prints.  Development of designs using digital and manual textures and patterns.  Basic preparation and color management will be done. Plan of Work: My work shall include the step by step procedure that I will be following along the way that shall consist of several attempts on motifs, pattern making, and initial manual sketching as well as all the Photoshop attempts. Research boards and mood boards shall be developed and a color palette will also be presented along with the final display. Photoshop and manual designing techniques will be used that will include mixed media and different sorts of embellishments that I’ve been taught during my degree. All of my work on this theme will be displayed in the final degree show, inclusive of the final products.

    The Vision Glory
    (UMT, Lhr, 2019-06) Maria Altaf
India’s ancient artefacts tell us about kings and customs, droughts and battles. These artefacts give us insight into the cultural heritage of India. Historical artefacts continued to give me hope, and inspired me to focus my design, project on their intricate structure. It is a clever way of bringing the past to life. It surely feels fresh, in the state that is better known for ornate buildings. Various structures arouse the majesty of the Indian artefacts and ancient forts splendidly. Each one suggests an attractive space into India's gigantic historical and cultural diversity. Two renowned artist Suki Cheema and Rahul Mishra have already done research on Indian ancient art and artefacts. Suki Cheema, he is a textile designer and he visited all the historical places in India from which he got inspired. He modifies those art and design into modern home textile. He also worked with Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Diane von Furstenberg. The reason I inspired from him is that he doesn’t focus on one aspect rather he focuses on all the areas which linked with historical places from where he can conclude marvelous ideas and put those idea into his work. The areas in which I am covering my research are ancient Indian palaces, temple and Mughal gardens artefacts. The objectives of project is to use the built environment, art, antiques, historic interiors and design as source material for understanding and modifying shape, style and design of fabric, and other material and also • To impart knowledge in the field of Textiles. • To demonstrate a variety of techniques • To select appropriate materials for their Textiles and design projects • To provide a concept of design in keeping with the cultural and social values • To design and create simple textile objects by using feasible outlines and making operative use of possessions • To prepare products on the basis of style, fashion, price, size and fit • To learn to care for fabric of different fiber contents The focus of the research is to explore different sites of Indian artefacts, scrutinize and conclude the concept behind these stately and full of meaning structures and develop a range of unlimited prints. This project revolves around different products of Industrial home textile, which is rich in artisanal value but often of a practical and functional nature rather than avant-garde. I will use different techniques to make my work effective. This project will generate a unique design, which was never seen before. They will correlate with the upcoming trends of the contemporary market, with the application of diverse medium, attracts the eye with its unique design formation and fabric production. Moreover, this project will give understanding of structural tastes and manners, which convey massive ideas about supremacy, grade and kingdom and how these changed with the passage of time.
