Abstract
Background: While it is sometimes misunderstood as a sect of Islam, Sufism is a broader style of worship that transcends sects, directing followers’ attention inward. The Sufi practice focuses on the renunciation of worldly things, purification of the soul, and the mystical contemplation of God’s nature. Followers try to get closer to God by seeking spiritual learning known as tariqa. Sufism is a mystical form of Islam, a school of practice that emphasizes the inward search for God and shuns materialism. It has produced some of the world’s most beloved literature, like the love poems of the 13th-century Iranian jurist Rumi. Its modern-day adherents cherish tolerance and pluralism, qualities that in many religions unsettle extremists. Inspiration: In this modern world as everyone is so busy in his life and believes that money, possession, physical comfort, and many more that happens are more important than the spiritual value of life. We forget that what happens to us is not because of our ideas and plans but are our rewards as god blessings. Our egos make us imagine that we are the cause of action. We need to control our arrogance and vanity because what God gives us he can also take away in a flash. As Sufism teaches that we can see beyond the veils of darkness which envelopes our belief systems. One who sincerely devotes himself or herself to a program of Sufi training may eventually approach the state where one can “see things as they truly are” when one can “worship God as though you can see Him”, and when can truly realize that one is “in the world, but not of the world”. For many people in the modern world, it may seem that such teachings are alien to their culture or are a thing of the past – if indeed they ever existed! Others may instinctively recognize that their destiny lies in the unfolding of these teachings in their lives, but are faced with overwhelming difficulties in finding a trustworthy and authoritative teacher who can show them the way out of the darkness. Being healthy does not imply to show happiness. Happiness can be defined as a state of mind free from anger, sorrow, fear, that wealth cannot purchase. For example, in this materialistic world man money and time also to spend the time according to his choice. On one side he may enjoy what he wants in his life as he spends money according to his choice but on the other side if he passes through some kind of tension, at this particular stage he will face total failure even if he spends a lot of money. At this particular stage, we become more spiritually mature, and the desire for god increases. The inspiration of my thesis is the idea that I wanted to have a closer look at Sufism and dig a little deeper to my extent and try as a lot of beautiful patterns and compositions can be created once we jump into it. Whirling dervishes and Arabic quotes have always fascinated me and I want to bring it all out on the fabric. Sufism is a pure and deep form of love which according to me should be praised, also by bringing it more into life by connecting design and art and different sorts of embellishments to it. Objectives of the Project: The main objective is to create patterns and compositions inspired by mysticism. The aim is to use my experience developed throughout my degree program and use my skills in developing Page 9 of 60 beautiful designs and work with them to explore my creativity to the utmost. Countless textile patterns can be created using this inspiration for making these patterns. Sufism has an extremely strong impact on society and the viewer as it draws them towards spirituality. Sufism has a striking and impressive look as it makes you feel captivated and cozy at the same time. The thesis will involve: • Firstly, developing designs using digital and manual textures and patterns. Basic preparation and color management will be done. • Secondly, colors most prominently used will be bold as in shades of maroon, black, and beige. • Thirdly, the patterns will include Arabic writings and whirling dervishes. Plan of Work: My work will include a step by step procedure that will be both concept and research-based. After carrying out the research I will develop research boards and mood boards for my theme that will include various inspired Sufi patterns. A color palette will also be developed. Then I will do initial sketching for motif and pattern development. Repeat patterns and other methods will be used for design creation. Further, the colour application will be done. Both, Photoshop and manual design development techniques will also be used; which includes the use of mixed media techniques for the manual purpose. All the work will be displayed from portfolios to end products in a display session. Expected Outcomes: All in all, the eventual product line creation will visually highlight the inspiration gathered from already existing Sufi scriptures or art. I will communicate my idea through my product range and self-expression for the fulfilment of my thesis aims and objectives. The scope of my work will help protrude my idea of mystical designs. Expectantly, prints will be developed for home furnishing. A wide range of prints will be produced for home textile products, for example, sofa, lampshade, and cushion prints. As a result, Sufism influenced designs will emerge as captivating yet cozy and contemporary home textile products.
