(Journal of Islamic Thought and Civilization, 2016) Ayesha Mehmood Malik; Memoona Rashid
A courtyard in buildings plays an important role in determining climatic setting, as well as physical and 1 psychological environment for the residents. This paper focuses on the evolution of courtyard houses in light of the teachings of Islam. Islamic planning, in terms of structures, spatial arrangement and form, determines the socio-cultural features of its community. In Islam, a house is represented as a shelter where families can enjoy their privacy and ease within the domain of Islamic values. For this, a detailed study of various courtyard housing has been carried out, probing their history, evolution, form and elements. A side reference of the Islamic ideology is also studied for a better understanding of an Islamic courtyard house. The analysis concludes that with only a few exceptions, the courtyards functions the same in both the contemporary and Islamic worlds-providing privacy and fully ventilated dwelling. This study provides appropriate architectural design strategies that could promote the use of Islamic values in modern yet contemporary courtyard houses worldwide.

Glazed tile ornamentation in Mughal monumental architecture.
(International Journal of Research in Chemical, Metallurgical and Civil Engineering, 2016) Saima Gulzar
The rich and diversified architectural ornamentation in the Mughal monumental architecture is an intelligent interplay of geometry, proportions, colours, materials and techniques in the form of highly intricate and sophisticated unparalleled patterns derived from the multiplication of basic Islamic art forms. This colourful expression of glorious Mughal era reflects their artistic excellence and most refined architectural sense that glorified the barren/ deserted Indian subcontinent during their reign. Mughals introduced different types of architectural ornamentations including glazed tiles, stone mosaic or inlay works, fresco/mural paintings, stucco etc. for the decoration of the interior and exterior surfaces. The extensive use of glazed tiles for ornamentation by the Mughals especially on exteriors is attributed to their weather durability and unique designs. The glazed tile variegated designs ranges from infinite complex permutations of lines and curves to flowing floral patterns and human, animal, plant life subjects to extremely graceful calligraphic forms. This research is the comprehensive and explorative study of the glazed tiles origin, their evolution and various influences during their development in the Mughal period (1526-1857 A.D.). In addition, the study not only explores the transformation phases essential for architectural conservations but also provides the reference for future analytical studies.

    MUSIC COMPLEX
(University of Management and Technology, 2018) Majid, Abdul
Music is composed and performed for many purposes, ranging from aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, or as an entertainment product for the marketplace. As Pakistan, a country in Southern Asia, has a rich culture and heritage. Formerly, a part of 'Hindustan', it became an independent country, but the cultural beliefs and other cultural values were adopted by both the nations. Music in specific has the lead in commonness. Due to globalization, one can easily share and see what things are being proposed, adapted or discovered in different parts of the world, same as the music. Pakistan being one of the versatile countries has a talent of devouring things easily. The type of instruments played, and the number of languages being spoken here are countless which makes Pakistan as optimistic country. The main purpose of this project is to provide opportunity to those people who are interested in moving further with their skills in the field of music. Not just focusing on the temperament of the local region but mastering the western side of the music as well. Music arrived at the forefront of my mind when considering topics I might reference when creating architecture. This undoubtedly happened due to a personal interest I have in music as it lies at the very core of my upbringing. This thesis report progresses in a specific manner such that the special topics are taken into consideration in the beginning and going down further into detailed discussions from then. This is done so, such that one is given a proper understanding to how the design was evolved and what plays the design deciding fac

Virtuoso enclave: museum of modern art and hi-tech
(University of Management and Technology Lahore, 2017) Syed Abdul Mateen
We live in a world where everything you touch has infinite possibilities and insurmountable meanings, Yet there seems to be a constant dichotomy within each sphere of dialogue, with each end being a string of contingencies in itself. It is said that architecture, like all art, can and does have its philosophical argument, with each architect holding his own end of the string and pulling ; each school of thought addressing a set of notions and issues that are vital to them. Keeping in mind set patterns of architectural discourse, it would be interesting to observe if architecture could belong to a group of philosophers that negate all inherent meaning. Could then the diverse language of architecture depict the views of a society that is incongruent and incoherent? Looking around the cities of Pakistan, observing architecture, which has grown historically from a montage of borrowed images; it is clear to see that we are victims of situational absurdity. Concrete block after concrete block, glass tower after glass tower, most of our urban environment is not what may be called absurd construction, even Tough they may look it. Instead it would be wise to say that they are thought or unskilled architecture, serving only purposes of function, that too without much sensitivity. For an 'absurd building' (if their exists such a thing) is not one whose functionality is distorted and is incoherent in its visualization but one that has been preconceived as an in congruency within this concrete and glass maze. If the absurd is born of the dichotomy between 'the human need and the unreasonable silence of the world' then by that standard everything is absurd ; for all tangible and intangible situations can be viewed as needs, and all reactions or consequences can be measure by the relativity of their sibation. Neither can be pinpointed, neither can be considered righteous or true. Th. Is view causes all things, including architecture, to lose meaning, hence making all efforts futile and despondent. But can architecture really have no meaning? From the archetypal childhood drawing of the house it is clear that architecture is a symbol of solidarity and comfort. It is viewed as a vessel that carTies a function, which in tum, holds meaning. So if architecture were to have no inherent meaning would it then also have to disobey the laws of functionality? And does this lack of functionally then make the building just a pile of bricks? It is human nature to appropriate space, and it has been observed that the user is able to find a bener suited functionality for a space than an architect viewing his drawings; for lived and shared experience can never equal a preconceived notion. But if absurd architecture were limited to its visual sphere, then that would make it not only shallow and superfluous, it would also take away from the notion that architecture can be layers of juxtaposed expressions. If a building cannot convey the intention of the architect, it is no longer a testament to his philosophy. So for an absurd building to convey its meaninglessness, does it have to, b like the emperor's new clothes

This new tradition of modernization is prompting people to leave their homes and to get exposure to the world. As everything comes naturally with positive and negative impacts, one wants to see how this big change is affecting our world. Asia, in particular is the most affecting continent where one can see the rapid growth of urbanization. This paper examines various aspects of urbanization in Asia region and taking Pakistan as prototype of urbanization phenomena. The reason behind the study is the lack of formal housing in urban spaces as one of the major consequences of unplanned and uncontrolled modernization of cities in Pakistan. The analytical insight into current issues and challenges faced by Pakistan, because of increasing population and rising trend of migration toward urban centers, will serve in identifying the problems in right direction. Answers and solutions only then can be formatted based on the organized examination of existing problems. Affordable housing is the new remedy for the current problem of urban housing and it has been accepted by the urban poor like a holy thing. It has something to serve in real or it’s just a superficial concept to give a timely relief to poor community.
