Difficulties faced by students with hearing impaired in urdu reading at primary level
(UMT, Lahore, 2019) Sumreen Suleman; Asia Sattar
This thesis aims to point out the problems faced by the students who are deaf or hard of hearing in reading Urdu at primary level. Urdu being our national language plays an important role in learning and perceiving information to the students regardless of any disabilities. I have collected data from different schools and selected students at primary levels e.g. grade three and five to know the root of the issues because students at primary levels are learning the basics of the Urdu reading. At this levels they are being provided with the basic skills of language. The study shows that deaf students face problems because of lack of strategies by the teachers in teaching Urdu as a sign language, classrooms settings and environment, overcrowded classrooms, inconsistency of the curriculum, different signs for the same alphabets, and lack of emotional and behavioral support. Other issues include other disabilities along with hearing loss lack of resources, time management and students’ struggle to get the instructions right. By making a student centered approach to teach how to read Urdu is the best way to cope up with the issues. Every student has his/her own pace of learning. Teacher should observe and acknowledge those issues first and then should devise a strategy according to the specific need of the students. The governments should make an effort to devise a standard curriculum for teaching Urdu as a sign language to all over the Pakistan. It will strengthen the path for learning for these students. Learning how to read Urdu is very important for students with hearing impairments because it is not just a language skill they are going to be acquired with but it is a way of communication for them. So it should not be neglected in any way
