Item Hopelessness and social support among adolescents(UNIVERSITY OF MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY, 2015) Rashid, KomalPresent study investigated the relationship between hopelessness and social support in adolescents. It was hypothesized that there will be negative correlation between hopelessness and social support. A sample of 140 adolescents was selected through convenient sampling technique, comprising of 70 males and 70 females of 8th to 12th grade with age range of 13-18 years. Children Hopelessness Scale (Kazdin, Rodgers &Colbus, 1986) and Vaux Social Support Record (Vaux, Phillips, Holly, Thompson, Williams & Stewart, 1986) were used to collect data from 140 adolescents. Demographic information included gender, age, and family type. There is significant negative correlation between hopelessness and social support. It means that participants who have higher hopelessness perceive a lower degree of social support in their life. There are no gender differences when the two variables of hopelessness and social support are analyzed. Girls and boys did not differ significantly from each other when their scores on hopelessness and social support were compared.Item Parental rejection and psychological adjustment among adolescents. A cross cultural study(UNIVERSITY OF MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY, 2015) Manzoor, RehamThis study examines parental rejection and psychological adjustment among adolescents. It is a cross cultural study of two diverse groups. The sample of the study consisted of Pakistani boys (n=50) living in Saudi Arabia and boys (n=50) live in Pakistan with the age range 13-17. Mostly adolescents belonged to middle and upper-middle in Saudi Arabia and upper-middle and upper socioeconomic class in Pakistan. The tests used in this research are Pearson’s correlations, regression, independent sample t-test Alpha coefficients, Mean and Standard Deviation. Results revealed that children living in Saudi Arabia perceive their parents especially to their fathers more rejected as compare to the children living in the Pakistan. The most significant predictor of parental rejection was parental rejection perceived by fathers. While psychological adjustment did not significantly predict. Results of this research show those adolescents of Pakistan recognize their parents as compliant as well as to self-report fairly positive psychological adjustment. In addition, the adolescents tend to see their mothers and fathers as being almost equal in mutual status and power. However, even though perceived or recognized acceptance by parents is not considerably linked with the adjustment of males and females psychologically, parental power nor status is associated with the youth’s adjustment. Furthermore implications and suggestions are also discussed in the end.Item Perception of freedom in personal domain among adolescents: A qualitative study(UNIVERSITY OF MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY, 2015) Sadaf SherThis study was carried to see how adolescents perceive their personal domain and freedom of adolescents to do work according to their own will. The personal domains authorize to different actions that a person considers apply to own self and also to the outside of the area of rational regulation. For this purpose qualitative approach was followed. The objective of the study was to explore the gender differences while girls have more freedom of choice as compared to boys and to explore the personal domain perception among adolescent. For this purpose in phase 1 4 focus groups were conducted and in phase 2 an interview guideline was developed based on material from FGD 20 participants were carried out. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. The adolescents of our nation have awareness regarding their proposal choices such as dress, making friends etc. But despite having this awareness they do not have the liberty to exercise their independent choices as can be observes in the west. In Pakistani culture the parents do not consider their children wise enough to take decision. On the other hand, some parents do not even take into account the personal choices of their children and instead impose their will on them.Item Psychological health problem and bullying behavior among adolescents(University of Management and Technology, 2014) Ayesha HameedBullying behavior in childhood has been found out associated with depression, anxiety and stress in adolescence. The objective of the study was to examine gender and age differences among bullies and comparing adolescents on depression, anxiety and stress. In present study of 113 school going adolescents (Girls=57, Boys=56) in grades 5 to 10 participated. Sample was selected through systematic random sampling technique from public and private schools in Lahore. Adolescents completed Depression, Anxiety & Stress Scale (DASS) developed by Lovibond & Lovibond (1995) and Illinois bullying scale by Espelage & Holt (2001). The results indicated that across gender (F=8.66,p=.00), girls showed more stress (M=16.96,SD=8.63) than boys (M=12.66=SD=6.83). Further correlation analysis indicated age significantly and positively correlated to victim (r=.26**), bullying behavior (r=.20*), depression (r=.25**), anxiety (r=.27**) and stress (r=.34*). Father's education was also observed significantly negatively correlated to bullying behavior (r=-.20**) among adolescents. Regression analysis was performed to identify the predictor of psychological health problems among adolescents. Analysis revealed mental health problem as significant predictor of bullying behavior (β= .18, F= 4.00, p<.05) and stress (β= .21, F= 5.34, p<.05). Fighting was also observed as significant predictor of stress(β= .29, F= 10.18, p<.05). Victimization was observed as significant predictor of depression (β=.18, F= 4.12, p<.05), anxiety (β= .26, F= 8.40, p<.05) and stress (β= .23, F= 6.46, p<.05). Adolescents who are bullies and also reported symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress were at an increased risk of developing psychological health related problems. The need for psychiatric intervention should be considered. Furthermore, teachers and parents can prepare mutual management plan collaboratively effective for school going adolescents.Item A study of aggressive fantasies among adolescents(UNIVERSITY OF MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY, 2015) Qureshi, FatimaThe focus of the study is to investigate aggressive fantasies among adolescents.
