Item Assessing the link between intellectual capital formation and performance of a university(2008) Naveed YazdaniThe resource-based view (RBV) of the firm grew out of frustration with the structure-conduct-performance paradigm of the industrial organization (IO) view of the firm and the early RBV theorists found the IO view – that a firm’s success was wholly determined by its external environment – to be unrealistically limited and constraining. This paper is an attempt to apply the RBV of the firm to university settings and it looks at the process of Intellectual Capital (IC) formation of a university as the basis for its performance. The paper deals with the issues of IC formation, its measurement, definition of a university’s performance, its measurement and the association between the two. The paper provides an overview of the various RBV theories along with a detailed discussion on the notions of strategy, resources, capabilities, competencies and creation of competitive advantage of a firm with special emphasis on the role of human capital in sustaining this competitive advantage. While applying the RBV in Education industry, the four schools of University of Management & Technology (UMT) Lahore are studied in the light of RBV. The paper also highlights the limitations of the current study along with some of the future research implications for the human capital-RBV link.Item Civilization and Organization Theory(UMT.Lahore, 2010) Naveed YazdaniCulture, nation state and society are generally employed in contextualizing organization theory. The construct civilization which transcends national, cultural and societal boundaries is not used in indigenization of organization theory. This thesis employs civilization as a theoretical construct to study and analyze organization theory of Western civilization. The analysis is undertaken by using discourse approach. Two parallel discourses, historical and organizational, are constructed for the Western civilization. The historical discourse presents the major thoughts and ideas of the civilization. The organizational discourse shows the impact of historical discourse on organization theory of the civilization. The historico-organizational discourse of civilization is used to construct the reflexive relation between civilization and organization theory. Three elements research model is used for conducting this study. The epistemology of constructionism and theoretical perspective of interpretivism is used to formulate discourses of the Western civilization. The discourse analyses are followed by a discussion on the reflexive relation between civilization and organization theory, grounding of civilization in the contemporary organizational theories, rational of positioning civilization as an organizational epistemology, concluding remarks, major future research implications and basic limitations of the study. A four-tiered conceptual framework is represented to posit civilization as an episteme for organization theory.Item Civilization and organization theory: a new eistemological discourse(2010) Naveed YazdaniCulture, nation state and society are generally employed in contextualizing organization theory. The paper also finds that the Secularization hypothesis of Western Modernity is still valid for Western cultures, Judaism and Christianity but its application is highly unlikely in case of the third monotheist religion Islam. The paper expounds the causes of this proposition keeping in view the historical, religious and economic perspectives of Islam.Item The effect of affect-based and cognition-based trust on the sharing and use of tacit knowledge(3rd International Conference UMT, Lahore, 2013) Naveed Yazdani; Adnan SiddiqueIn this era of knowledge economy when knowledge is considered the most important resource for gaining sustainable competitive advantage, it is necessary for organizations to leverage this resource. Organizations should build interpersonal trust among their employees so that the tacit knowledge which resides in their employees is utilized. The interpersonal trust is of two type’s i.e. affect-based and cognition-based trust. This study finds the effect of alternative types of trust on the willingness of employees to share and use tacit knowledge using a sample of 102 respondents from different business organizations. The findings support the hypothesis that both type of trust i.e. affect-based and cognition-based trust is important in determining the willingness of employees to share and use their tacit knowledge. Research limitations are discussed in the end.Item Emotional labor & big five personality model(3rd International Conference on Business Management (ICoBM), UMT, Lahore, Pakistan, 2013) Naveed YazdaniExhibit of emotions has become a topic of great interest for sociologists and psychologists during the last few years. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of four existential attributes that are death, responsibility, alienation and meaningfulness, on the work of HR managers. The study also asserts that the work of HR managers has an existential dimension to it. It also argues that HR managers have human qualities. They react to human predicament and need emotional identification with their work and organization. Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on the responses of HR managers developed on the basis of an interview guide specifically designed for this purpose. The data have been collected through extensive and in-depth field interactions with HR managers working in diverse organizations. The research approach taken here is to focus on the discrete moments of role performance of HR managers that represent microcosms of the larger complexity. Those moments are windows into the multiplicity of factors that are constantly relevant to person-role dynamics. Focusing on specific moments of work role performance of HR managers is like using the zoom lens of a camera: a distant stationary image is brought close and revealed as a series of innumerable leaps of engagement and falls of disengagement. Findings – The study brings out the emotional and human dilemmas of HR managers working in public and private sector organizations. While discussing and linking Kahn's model with Sartrean thoughts can provide unique perspective within the strategic human resource management especially in Pakistani organizations which was missing not only in Kahn's model but also in management literature. Originality/value – The study makes a fresh inquiry into the nature of HRM and the existential realities experienced by the HR managers at work place. The study is unique because of its extensive field interactions based on a well-designed interview guide hitherto unapplied in the organization studies.Item Faith & reason: a synthesis in our society(Oxford Business & Economics Conference, 2007) Naveed YazdaniItem From modernity to postmodernity: a historical discourse on western civilization(2011) Naveed Yazdani; Hasan Sohaib Murad; Rana Zamin AbbasThis paper traces the historical discourse of Western Civilization from the period of Modernity to Postmodernity. Major political, social, moral, and scientific shifts occurred in the Western Civilization during Modernity because of the maturation of underpinning utilitarian and materialistic ethics. Postmodernity is a critique on the ideologies of modernity. The identifiable difference between the two lies in the nature of discourse. The discourse of modernity rests on the transcendent criteria such as ‘progress’ and ‘reason’. Postmodern discourse, on the other hand, analyzes social life in terms of paradox and indeterminacy and rejects all metanarratives and overarching guiding principles, religion, science, objectivity, rationality and the notion of truth. Yet the two are closely related and complement each other by sharing a deep commitment and affinity to empiricism, concrete forms and reductionism.Item A historicity in management research(3rd International Conference on Business Management (ICoBM), UMT, Lahore, Pakistan, 2013) Mudassir Farooqi; Naveed YazdaniThis theoretical paper focuses on the application of pure empiricism in management research. The paper traces the ahistoric consequences of empiricism in management research. It first traces the evolution of empiricism as an art of inquiry based on Cartesian dualism. It then focuses on empiricism as a dominant methodology of management research. The paper also traces the consequences of empiricism and resulting ahistoricity in the form of gap between management research and practice, moral and ethical problems in organizations. The underlying question which the paper raises is the ahistoricity in management research as a byproduct of pure empiricist stance. The paper concludes by proposing that for the management research to be effective and useful for the practitioner it has to bring context specific knowledge of organizations.Item Hofstede's cultural model, lmx and Pakistani historic-socio-political discourse(2013) Naveed YazdaniThis paper grounds its analytical historical discourse of Pakistani culture, society and leadership (political, social and economic) in Hofstede’s model of national and organizational culture. It borrows from LMX theory of leadership which entails both transactional and transformational elements and applies it in the context of Pakistani leadership style. Since the founding ideology of Pakistan is the religion of Islam, the paper also undertakes a detailed account of Divine Commands based socio-economic Islamic precepts. It also presents some empirical evidence reflecting the present Pakistani cultural and societal values embedding both the culture and leadership style of the country. The paper challenges Hofstede’s labeling of Pakistani culture as collectivistic and calls for future research on the ‘Dark Side’ of LMX practices prevalent in Pakistani discourse. .Item Ikujiro nonaka:A km guru(3rd International Conference on Business Management (ICoBM), UMT, Lahore, Pakistan, 2013) Abdul Rasheed Kausar; Naveed YazdaniThis theoretical paper traces Ikujiro Nonaka’s managerial writings over a period of 25 years from 1984 to 2009. The paper attempts to highlight some of the reasons behind the traditional ‘hype’ created for the Prescriptive/Planning mode, its impact on the teaching behavior of the teachers of strategic management and, the underlying philosophical and theoretical assumptions behind the two extreme end of the strategy continuum. Based on these underpinnings, the paper presents some propositions and calls for launching research efforts to test and verify these propositions. The paper proposes to include the strategy continuum view for the teaching of Strategic Management courses at graduate and under-graduate levels in the business schools.Item Organization theory and poetry: a not so elusive link(2012) Naveed Yazdani; Hasan Sohaib Murad; Rana Zamin AbbasSince the times of Western modernity, knowledge is compartmentalized as different fields. This has however, not mitigated the influence of natural science model of theorizing on social sciences. As a result the discipline of organization theory has grown without the influence of abstract, ephemeral and metaphysical fields such as; religion, history, mystic philosophy, arts and literature. With the rise of organizational cultural studies and the emergence of symbolic-interpretive view of organizing during the last three or four decades, the trend is however gradually shifting. Corporate aesthetics is one such field within organization theory which places value on the aesthetical aspects of managing and organizing. Taking lead from corporate aesthetics, this paper highlights the link between organization theory and literature (poetry, both English and Urdu). The linguistic and conceptual instrument of metaphors is isolated as the underpinning tool of this link. The role of metaphors in organization theory assumes further importance since the emergence of ‘social construction’ and ‘sense making’ view of organizations. The paper reinforces the views of contemporary writers of organization theory that the field draws from multiple and diverse disciplines by highlighting the link between organization theory and poetry through employing metaphoricity.Item Organizational democracy and organization structure link: role of strategic leadership & environmental uncertainty(2010) Naveed YazdaniThis theoretical paper focuses on the issue of implementing democratic principles in modern day organizations facing turbulent and changing environments around them. The paper captures the notion of participatory style of management through the construct; organizational democracy. It traces the origin of this construct from theories and philosophies of political democracy. The paper also briefly describes the notion of economic democracy and why it failed to succeed in the face of partial success of political democracy. The underlying question which the paper raises is the role of organization structure and strategic leadership style in the successful implementation of democratic principles in organizations in the face of a turbulent and dynamic environment. The paper also attempts to raise some thought provoking questions for future research.
