Item Woman as a ‘mad genius’(UMT, Lahore, 2022) Iqra NaseerPassion and curiosity of achieving something beyond one’s league can drive anyone astray as long as they maintain balance between their emotions and impulse. Our two female protagonists strive for perfection in both their professions. Both possess conviction, determination and willpower to flourish and achieve their goals, but are their obsessions with success and excellence plain madness or are they magnificently genius? This paper aims to analyze the fine line that exists between insanity and brilliance by viewing these two protagonists through a psychoanalytic lens. It also includes the factors that distinguish the boundary, which, if crossed can lead to fatal consequences. This research focuses on a comparative analysis between a movie Black Swan and a Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit, which has not been inspected before. Black Swan is based on an original story by Heinz while The Queens Gambit is an adaptation of a same-titled novel written in 1983. With the help of qualitative investigation of the plotline this study intends to focus on analysis of Nina’s and Beth’s obsession to compete and win. By an in-depth Film based textual analysis of the movie ‘Black Swan’ and the series ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, this paper attempts to bring elements on the forefront which will prominently distinguish both the character’s traits by applying Freudian psychoanalysis. These papers utilize these psychoanalytic frameworks and a pinch of feminism to breakdown and subsequently analyze the personalities of both female protagonists.
