Item Hydraulic remodelling of irrigation channel(UMT.Lahore, 2018) HASEEB AKHTAR; AAMIR SAEED; TANEES UL HUSNAIN AHMADThe thesis develops and implements the remodelling approach for large alluvial irrigation channels. The approach mainly includes in-depth analysis of original/existing design parameters, identification of existing condition of channel and hydraulic structures along with their problems, evaluating different options and finalizing the remodelling parameters by emphasizing hydraulic, structural and economic consideration. UJC in Pakistan was selected as case study channel. After visiting the UJC it was observed that canal was facing multiple problems like excessive silt deposition, erosion of banks, inadequate freeboard. The reason of these problems was canal operate at less discharge which has low velocity of flow that was not suitable for regime channel. Due to these problems bed width of the canal was enhanced and depth of the canal was reduced. The channel was modelled by HEC-RAS software at enhanced discharge for various structural scenarios and the best option was found to enhance the depth 13.55ft and keeping the bed width same 240ft to keep width to depth ratio in permissible limits due to economical consideration. Hydraulic modelling of the hydraulic structures of the UJC including bridges were also conducted to check their suitability for remodeling of the channel at enhanced discharge. Most of the hydraulic structure were found safe to pass the enhanced discharge and only few structures required raising of their deck slab. The foundation of the hydraulic structures were checked and found safe for subsurface flow. The remodeling of UJC as per recommended parameters will ensure increased agriculture and power benefits and enhance conveyance efficiency.
