Abstract
A technique has been proposed to modernize the existing billing procedure. In this project, an 8051 microcontroller has been used to control the main operations performed in the system. An electromechanical meter has been installed in this project to measure the consumption of power in kilowatt-hours. To obtain the benefits of GSM technology, a GSM module has been implemented in this system. The module has been interfaced with the microcontroller, and the microcontroller communicates with the module through AT commands. External memory has been interfaced with the microcontroller to store the units that will be charged by suppliers. An opto-coupler sensor, which is a hybrid of a photodiode and an infrared light-emitting diode, has been used to detect the motion of the metallic disc, which continues its motion to indicate the consumption of power. This sensor has also been interfaced with the microcontroller to receive a pulse upon the completion of one revolution of the disc. A TRIAC has been used to work as a switch, and it also receives signals from the microcontroller to control the switching of the power supply. In this way, both suppliers and consumers benefit from this technique.
