Abstract
Power factor is the ratio of real power that is flowing through the load to the apparent power in the circuit. It is the power that is borrowed from the electricity supplier for the system. Power companies regulate and control power factor and user maybe charged more if their power factor falls below a certain level. Power factor correction method reduces the phase difference between the current and voltage thus improving the power factor. The most common and economical way of improving it is by using capacitor bank that generate opposite reactive power. The main goal of this project is to design a system using PLC and Microcontroller to control the power factor automatically to the maximum possible achievable value automatically without user controlling or regulating the system. Circuit will switch its supply from wye-delta then power factor correction system will measure the all three line power factor and display it on the lcd. Power factor will be measured by the delay in line current with respect to line voltage. The processor will make a decision on whether improving of power factor is required and will signal PLC to select the right capacitor. System can be installed wherever motors are used , that could be industries, factories or household items. It will correct power factor and reduce line losses and make a system more efficient and stable and gives extra KVA from the existing supply.
