Abstract
The fact is that the growing need of real-time standardization of automation equipment at the field
level with the enterprise its resulted in the high demand of communication between Programmable
Logic Controllers (PLCs) and SQL databases to be taken as a serious need in the sphere of
industrial automation. Nevertheless, the majority of commercially bought products that help to
establish this connectivity are frequently expensive, proprietary, and loosely coupled with
particular communication methods or vendor platforms. This draws constraints on organizations
that would demand scalable and flexible solutions at an affordable cost.
This research paper offers a non-protocol specific way of allowing two-way real-time
communication between PLCs and SQL databases via KepServerEX and Linked Tags. In contrast
to commercially available middleware or licensed platform programs, the given solution relies on
the functional capabilities that are freely distributed by KepServerEX, so no further software is
required. The method is bi-directional in offering that data may not just be read through in PLC
environment by SQL but also the capabilities to employ control instructions or parameters in the
SQL and send them back to the PLC.
The major strength of the method is its succession to different industrial protocols, in case of which
this method can be applied to Modbus, EtherNet/IP, which means it can be approached as universal
in a great number of automation contexts. Besides, the approach also gives the engineers and
system integrators an easy, vendor-independent avenue of facilitating the application of industrial
data communication without attaining excessive expenses.
