Abstract
Praise to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) is called “Na‘t” in Islamic religious poetry. It has an exalted status in Islamic literature. Na‘t has its own history, traditions and poetic diction. Some prominent poets of the Holy Prophet’s era like Hassan bin Thabit, Ka‘b bin Zuhair, Abdullah bin Rawaha and Ka‘b bin Malik (may Allah be well pleased with them) are well-known as the poets of the Prophet’s Court in Islamic history. This is an undeniable fact that Almighty Allah revealed many verses in the Holy Qur’an to express the glory and grandeur of and to
praise the Highly Praised One (may Allah be well pleased with them). The Holy Qur’an teaches us the use of appropriate and accurate words and style to address the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) in Sura al-Baqara, verse 104. The Qur’an exemplified this also that we must not say “اَعنِ راَ) ra‘ina-pay attention to us)”, rather we ْرنَا” submit mustنْظُُا) unzurna-bless us with your benevolent gaze)” to the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him), and that is the base of this research work. This verse draws our attention to the fact that equivocal, pun and ambiguous words, expressions and phrases must be avoided while addressing the Most Praised Creation (blessings and peace be upon him). In this verse, the Qur’an further teaches us the best use of words also. Although Na‘t is a genre of poetry, but since it is directly related to Prophethood, the most appropriate selection and use of words is the most important part in this form of poetry.
