Abstract
The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between perceived social
support, psychological morbidity, mindfulness and illness perception in cardiac patients. It
was hypothesized that there will be a negative correlation of perceived social support with
psychological morbidity and illness perception in cardiac patients. A quantitative study was
carried out to conduct this research and a correlational research design was used to get
required results. A non-probability purposive, sampling technique was used to select the
participants from both private and government hospitals, with age range 30 – 60 years.
Multidimensional scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet,1988), General Health
Questionnaire (Goldberg,1970), Mindful attention awareness scale (Ryan,2003) and Brief
Illness Perception scale (Weinman etal., 1996) were the tools used in this study. A significant
negative relation highlighted in social support, psychological morbidity and illness
perception and a positive relation found between psychological morbidity and illness
perception, whereas negative relation of mindfulness found with psychological morbidity and
illness perception in cardiac patients. Psychological morbidity mediates between mindfulness
and illness perception and between social support and illness perception as well. Significant
gender differences were found, psychological morbidity, mindfulness and illness perception
was higher in women as compared to men therefore social support was higher in men.
Furthermore, study will help to understand the significance of mindfulness and social support
in cardiac patients. Awareness regarding the effectives of mindfulness based cognitive
therapy will be help to minimize the impact of illness perception.
