Abstract
This study observed the effect of corporal punishment on students’ Self-esteem and their class performance. Corporal punishment has been the focus of considerable study over the past three decades. Some current research proposed that the use of corporal might have long term negative consequences for understudies, especially negative emotions that result in suffering pain, declining academic performance at school and adopting rigid attitude and losing interest including absenteeism in school. A convenient sample of 120 participants was drawn of boys and girls from nearly schools. The survey method was used to conduct the research. Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (Urdu ) of 12 items was used. Students who received corporal punishment were identified through one item answered as yes or no, Students academic performance was assessed on the basis of their last annual academic record. Data was collected after taking permission from the school authorities as well as individual students. Data was analyzed on SPSS version 14. Result showed boys had 26 as mean score and the girls had 27 on self-esteem. The difference between boys and girls mean scores was therefore statically non-significant, supporting our hypothesis that there would be no difference in the self-esteem of students across gender. Our second hypothesis was also supported as a moderate but significant Pearson Product Moment Correlation was found between self-esteem scores and the academic performance of the students (r = .256, p < .05). Both of these findings were in keeping with research literature. However, one hypothesis could not be supported as students who received punishment and those who did not receive punishment in school had obtained similar level of academic performance and the difference between their mean scores was not significant. Implications of the findings were discussed.
