Abstract
This study aims to examine the challenges and issues associated with introducing learner-centered instruction (backward design) to English language students and teachers in Pakistan. The main focus of this research revolves around the question of the problems faced by English language teachers and students when implementing learner-centered instructional education. This paper explores the rationale behind learner-centered education and investigates the challenges of this instructional design according to Pakistani English language teachers and students. A questionnaire was administered online to 120 selected English language students using convenient sampling. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 teachers to gather more data. The study is limited to English language students and teachers in Pakistan. The findings indicate that both teachers and students perceive the use of learner-centered curriculum at the Intermediate level in Pakistan as a challenging task. Therefore, policymakers and educational managers should provide training for English language teachers and guide them in supporting their students to meet the academic and social demands of learner-centered instruction.
