Abstract
Purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between social media usage, body
image, cognitive distortions and augmented reality among young adults. Non-probability
convenience sampling technique was used to recruit the sample of 300 with age 18-25 years
both male and females. Social Networking Site Usage and Needs Scale (SNSUN) (Ali et al.,
2020), Appearance Anxiety Inventory (AAI) (Veale et al., 2014),Automatic Thought
Questionnaire (ATQ) (Hollon & Kendall, 1980),Self-photo Manipulation Scale (McLean et
al., 2015b) were the tools used to examine the relationship between study variables. There is
likely to be a positive relationship between social media usage and body image among young
adults. There is likely to be a positive relationship between social media usage and cognitive
distortions and among young adults. There is likely to be a positive relationship between
social media usage and augmented reality among young adults. Social media usage is likely
to predict body image, cognitive distortions and use of augmented reality among young
adults. Findings of this study showed a favorable association, with positive relationship
existed between all four variables. Findings also highlights the strong link between cognitive
distortions and having a negative body image and supports the importance of augmented
reality in case of body image concerns. Findings from this study should be useful in
spreading awareness among youth to look beyond their appearance and explore their own
strengths in the age of filters.
