Abstract
The study examined the perceptions regarding the impact of medium of instruction on students’ academic performance at under-graduate level. It also aimed to find out the differences between the perceptions of different groups of students and teachers on medium of instruction regarding its impact on students’ performance. It also tried to know the factors related to medium of instruction which directly or indirectly affect students’ academic performance. For this purpose, a quantitative descriptive type of research method was selected and sample of 100 undergraduate students and 34 teachers (specifically lecturers) was selected through stratified random sampling from two universities (1 private and 1 public) of Lahore. Questionnaire was used to collect relevant data for the study. Non-parametric tests were applied to analyze the collected data through SPSS 22.0. Through the perceptions, the results of this study showed that English as a language does not impact negatively on the students’ academic performance at under-graduate level, but the relationships do exist among the factors directly or indirectly related to language proficiency, medium of instruction and academic performance, which impact on students’ academic performance. The factors that have found to be related and impacted directly or indirectly on academic performance are: students’ English skills, teacher competency, anxiety and difficulties, parents’ education, financial resources, material resources and market demand, which promote complexities and difficulties and code-switching. Moreover, differences exist in the perception of students of private and public university and Urdu and English medium schooling. Whereas, considering teachers’ perceptions of private and public university, this study has not found major differences. In the end, conclusions and recommendations were given to overcome the hurdles related to medium of instruction and language conflicts at higher education level of Pakistan.
