Abstract
This research study was conduct to inspect the relationship between social networking
sites (SNS), fear of missing out (FoMO) and psychosocial wellbeing among university
students. Hypothesis stated that there is likely to be relationship among SNS usage (seeking,
friends, seeking convenience, seeking social support, seeking information and seeking
entertainment), FoMO and psychosocial wellbeing (emotional wellbeing, social wellbeing
and psychological wellbeing) among university students; there is likely to be the impact of
demographic variables (gender, age, years of education, number of friends, usage of
facebook, twitter, whatsapp, linkedin, Instagram, play games, texting, receiving mails, upload
profiles, likening and comments) on psychosocial wellbeing (emotional wellbeing, social
wellbeing and psychological wellbeing) among university students; SNS usage (seeking,
friends, seeking convenience, seeking social support, seeking information and seeking
entertainment) and FoMO are likely to be predictors of psychosocial wellbeing (emotional
wellbeing, social wellbeing and psychological wellbeing) among university students; and
FoMO is likely to be a mediator between SNS usage (seeking, friends, seeking convenience,
seeking social support, seeking information and seeking entertainment) and psychosocial
wellbeing (emotional wellbeing, social wellbeing and psychological wellbeing) among
university students. The sample was consisted of N=200 university students (n= 100 male
students and n=100 female students) from four universities (i.e. University of Management
and Technology, University of Central Punjab, Forman Christian College and University of
Lahore) with the age range of 18-26 years. Non-probability snowball sampling technique was
used. Social Networking Sites Usage Scale (Kim, Sohn, & Choi, 2011), Fear of Missing Out
Scale (Przybylski, Murayama, DeHaan, & Gladwell, 2013) and Mental Health Continuum
(emotional wellbeing, social wellbeing and psychological wellbeing) (Keyes, 1998) were
used as assessment measures in this study. After calculating the descriptive and reliability

values of the scales, the results of Pearson product correlation should that SNS usage has
positive relation with FoMO and psychosocial wellbeing. While FoMO has negative relation
with psychosocial wellbeing. Whereas, education has positive relation with psychological
wellbeing, meanwhile number of friends has positive relation with social wellbeing. The
results of regression PROCESS macro v3.4, (Hayes, 2019) showed that SNS usage and
FoMO are the predictors of psychosocial wellbeing. FoMO is the mediator between the
relationship of SNS usage and psychosocial wellbeing. This research implicates that increase
in fear of missing out cause the decline in psychosocial wellbeing among university students,
which compel them to use the social networking sites more to enhance their psychosocial
wellbeing.
