Abstract
Fiber to the home (FTTH) and Hybrid fiber coaxial are the latest access network technologies through which it is
possible to impart all kind of available services (voice, video and data) at high speed and with improved accuracy. This is
possible due to the revolution in the field of telecommunication and by the advent of Fiber optic cable, over which signals are in optic form rather than electric form.
End user can access the above mentioned services by two flavors of Fiber access network.
In first ( HFC) both fiber and coaxial are used to make the network more economical for the operator as well as for the
subscriber while in FTTH or passive optical network (PON)fiber is installed all the way to home. Both networks have their own advantages and drawbacks which will be in scope of this thesis. Video is one of most important part of the triple play as it required more bandwidth. So by covering the need of its distribution it is then easier to send voice or data over the network.
Data or information that is transmitted often encounters a signal altering physical channel (channel includes coaxial cable, optical fiber or wireless channel). Structure of the HFC and FTTH (access networks) and then all protocols required to
distribute the video channels, will also be present in upcoming pages.
