Abstract
The growing demand for sustainable and economical housing solutions has warranted constant innovation in the housing industry. Subsequently, given the advantages, container homes have gained traction as a revolutionary approach to modern housing. This predisposition towards container homes has also prompted scholarly interest and recent works have dwelled upon the prospect of container homes as a solution to urban housing in countries like Srilanka, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and so forth. Notwithstanding, there is an absence of similar works in Pakistan, which more or less presents similar socio-economic conditions. Consequently, this study taps into this research gap and seeks to explore the plausibility of repurposed shipping containers being transformed into functional, aesthetically appealing, and environment friendly homes in Pakistan. A country experiencing a surge in urban housing demand, container homes can admittedly provide a plausible solution. By delving into modern interior design strategies, material selection and spaceoptimization approaches, this study endeavors to reimagine steel structures into contemporary residential spaces. In doing so, the study also seeks to deliberate upon the challenges that smother container homes, namely, insulation & ventilation strategies, structural modifications, compliance with building and safety standards. Additionally, the research is also directed to elicit the prospect of container housing as a potential solution for urban housing and disaster relief shelters & challenges of container home design, including insulation, ventilation, structural modifications, and compliance with building codes. By relying on case studies and expert insights, the study attempts tobridge the chasm between industrial materials and modern interior design, demonstrating how steels containers can transform from mere steel structures into personalized housing which not only exude aesthetic excellence but also showcase sustainability and functionality. The thesis will begin by giving a fleeting overview of the existing literature on container homes, focusing on factors that have propelled its importance in contemporary times[1].Likewise, the challenges that impede an all out shift to container homes as a solution to urbanhousing will also be looked into. The literature review also seeks to deliberate on the geographical dynamics that underpin the adoption of containers as a solution to rapid urbanization with a particular interest in the socio-economic conditions. Moving on the thesis will identify and deliberate upon the research gap that this study seeks to address i.e. container homes as a solution to the rising need of urban housing in Pakistan. This section will attempt to draw onto the similarities that the case of Pakistan presents vis-à-vis the case studies elicited in the literature review section. The section that follows will delineate the methodology that this research will hinge onto followed by a section on the research findings. The thesis will conclude by a section on practical implications alongside avenues for future research .
