A Study of Muzaffarabad Airport An Analysis of small airport planning and development

Abstract
Airports help to connect geographically handicapped regions with the economic heart of the country. Air-travel not only provides connectivity but also provides accessibility, comfort, reliability and catalytic influence; in terms of tourism. Smaller airports are often not financially viable when made for the sole purpose of tourism and highly susceptible to the competition posed by ground transport means. Planning decisions for air-transport, such as making a new Greenfield or brownfield airport or extension of runways takes years and years of planning. Airports for their growth rely on the economic productivity of an area, tourism potential, industrial activity etc. But often economic developments are considered to be dependent on air travel alone often this leads to infrastructural white elephants. Airports like other industries and businesses and must run with a clear purpose of inclusive growth. With the collective approach from all stakeholders, creating distinction through branding and estimating target segment, smaller airports could be made a viable profit-earning entity instead of a liability.
