Abstract
This research aims at analysing the effects of MT on SLA in English-Urdu and Urdu-English translation by focusing on the students’ perspective. Given that machine translation technologies are now a part of language learning, it is important to understand the impact that they have on learners. This study adopts a survey and interview method to obtain data from students who use these tools in their learning institutions. The study shows that people have different perceptions towards machine translation as it is seen as useful for understanding and practice but at the same time it has drawbacks such as overdependence and inaccuracy. Thus, this research advances the current discussion on the use of technology in SLA and provides specific suggestions for teachers and developers of language learning technologies. Therefore, it is the objective of this research to identify and discuss the positive and negative effects of machine translation from the students’ point of view in order to guide the improvement of the integration of such tools in learning institutions.
