Abstract
Shock damper is a type of mechanical device used to smoothen out or absorb shock impulses and transmit kinetic energy. The shock absorber basically dampens the impact energy caused by an obstacle or a pithole. Shock absorber are used in a number of transportation vehicles including aircrafts to provide maximum comfort to the passengers. As the shock absorber are subjected to a number of cyclic loads spontaneous maintenance is required for proper working of the shock damper itself. Improper working of the shock damper due to any reason can prove to be quite fatal for the complete machinery. For proper working of the shock absorber a variable known as damping coefficient is determined. For the determination of the damping coefficient a mechanical test rig is designed and manufactured to perform the analysis on the relative shock damper. The mechanical test rig is used to provide a linear motion to the shock damper to conduct further analysis. The mechanical test rig will be further connected to a number of electronic circuits which is basically summed up as a data acquisition system. The data acquisition system will control the mechanical test rig and after several inputs by the user the damping coefficient will be deduced at the end by general mathematical equations. The values obtained from the analysis will be used in the equation for results. The basic need to design such a test rig is to compare the known and current values of the damping coefficient for the shock to be tested.
