Abstract
It is well-established that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are critical for the economic and social growth of any country. The issue of survival and growth of SMEs is closed linked with their firm’s performance. Different strategic perspectives have proposed suggestions for enhancing the performance of firms, and these perspectives have also been applied to the context of SMEs. The composition-based view is a newly proposed strategic perspective that focuses on the performance of SMEs operating in emerging economies. This perspective is developed specifically for SMEs and pays attention to the contextual factors of SMEs. However, the central tenets of the composition-based view have not been subjected to empirical examination. The current study aims to investigate the effect of composition-based strategy, and its components, on the performance of SMEs. In addition, this study aims to investigate if an entrepreneurial mindset and an uncertain business environment modify the effect of composition-based strategy on the performance of SMEs. It is proposed that compositional-based strategy, and its three components i.e. compositional capability, compositional competition, and compositional offering, positively influence the performance of SMEs
