This paperdiscussessomeofthemajorcommunicationtechnologieswhichincludeIEEEspecified ZigBee,WiMAXandWirelessLAN(Wi-Fi)technologies,GSM3G/4GCellular,DASH7andPLC(Power Line Communications),withspecialfocusontheirapplicationsinSmartGrids.TheSmartGrid environmentsanddomainssuchasHomeAreaAutomation,SubstationAutomation,Automated MeteringInfrastructure,Vehicle-to-GridCommunications,etc.areconsideredaspriorityareasfor developingsmartergrids.Theadvancements,challengesandtheopportunitiespresentinthesepriority areas arediscussedinthispaper.en_US
