Item REVIVAL OF BASIC SURVIVAL INSTINCT(UMT, Lahore, 2017) SIDRA SIDDIQUIThe advent of agriculture has ushered in an unprecedented increase in the human population and their domesticated animals. Today, over 800 million hectares is committed to soil-based agriculture, or about 38% of the total landmass of the earth. It has re-arranged the landscape in favor of cultivated fields at the expense of natural ecosystems, reducing most natural areas to fragmented, semi- functional units, while completely eliminating many others. A reliable food supply was the result. Modern agriculture employs a multitude of chemical products, and exposure to toxic levels of some classes of agrochemicals (pesticides, fungicides) have created other significant health risks that are only now being sorted out by epidemiologists and toxicologists. As if that were not enough to be concerned about , it is predicted that over the next 50 years, the human population is expected to rise to at least 8.6 billion, requiring an additional 10⁹ hectares to feed them using current technologies, or roughly the size of brazil. That quantity of additional arable land is simply not available. Solutions are already being applied in other developing countries like China, Switzerland, Malaysia Netherlands and so on but not yet even introduced in Pakistan. Scientists in Pakistan are still on basic research and busy in recording the consequences of urbanization on agricultural land instead of working on solution to cease the growing global food problems. Moreover in Pakistan there are not enough research centers where Think tanks can work together to find the better solution for the problem. Our solution involves the construction of an Modern agriculture research center with hi-tech vertical green house, bio-mass department and a civic garden and farmers market to involve the local public which altogether make a platform where not only scientists works for the solution but also students, farmers and public contributes their part in this challenge of growing population with the demand of more food in less agriculture land. This will lead us to one anticipated long-terms benefits that would be the gradual repair of many of the world’s damaged ecosystems through the systematic abandonment of farmland. In temperate and tropical zones, the regrowth of hardwood forests could play a significant role in carbon sequestration and many help reverse current trends in global climate change. Other benefits of vertical farming include the creation of a sustainable urban environment that encourages good health for all who choose to live there; new employment opportunities, cleaner air, safe use of municipal liquid waste, and abundant supply of safe drinking water.Item WELLNESS RETREAT(UMT, Lahore, 2017) ZOYA RIAZThis thesis focuses on creating architecture that enhances spiritual and mental healing by acting as a medium between human soul and the energy of the Universe. Today’s modern life is full of change and uncertainty, complicated relationships, urgent deadlines, and long workdays. People juggle multiple responsibilities, work, home life, care giving and relationships. Most adults experience challenges with stress and anxiety from time to time. Stress is a normal psychological and physical reaction to the ever-increasing demands of life. It can be triggered by an event that makes one feel frustrated or nervous. Stress management refers to the wide spectrum of techniques and therapies aimed at controlling a person’s levels of stress, especially chronic stress, usually for the purpose of improving everyday functioning. Stress will not disappear from your life, and stress management is not an overnight cure. But with ongoing practice and incorporation of resiliency into your lifestyle, through physical activity, activity, nutrition and creativity, you can learn to manage stress level and increase your ability to cope with life’s challenges. A healing design might shower a clearer method of refreshing the minds of stressed people. Building well and thinking well are in turn living well, and this architectural thesis serves as a journey in discovering how human health can manifest itself in a physical building. This building provides a safe and comfortable place for people to rebuild themselves. It uses natural healing remedies and holistic methods when treating patients back to a happy and healthy state of mind.Item A Network within a Network(UMT, Lahore, 2017) Faisal Iqbal KhanItem PAK-CHINA CULTURAL COMPLEX(UMT, Lahore, 2017) HAMEED KHAN NIAZIThe CPEC is an ongoing development mega project which aims to connect Gwadar Port of Pakistan to China’s northwestern region of Xinjiang, via a network of highways, railways and pipelines. The office building is one of the great icons of the twentieth century. Office towers dominate the skylines of cities in every continent. As the most visible index of economic activity, of social, technological, and financial progress, they have come to symbolize much of what this century has been about. To accomplish this impact, the buildings must benefit from an integrated design approach that focuses on meeting a list of objectives. Through integrated design, a new generation of high-performance office buildings is beginning to emerge that offers owners and users increased worker satisfaction and productivity, improved health, greater flexibility, and enhanced energy and environmental performance. Typically, these projects apply life-cycle analysis to optimize initial investments in architectural design, systems selection, and building construction.Item PRISON ARCHITECTURE(UMT, Lahore, 2017) ZKA AHSANA good first step forward is to start treating prisoners as human beings not profiting from their incarceration”, Sen Bernie Senders. Over centuries, the role of a prison has been that of a dark dungeon, implementing cruel punishments. This has not only made the crime rates go higher but has also destroyed innumerable lives. To counter this effect, numerous researches have been carried out in the modern world, some findings proving to be more effective than others, by significantly decreasing the crime rates. Although most of these researches focus on the human behavior and psychology, a very important aspect in human life is mostly overlooked. This aspect is architecture, which not only provides shelter but can also mold and alter human behavior. This research will focus on rehabilitation, through architecture, employing environmental psychology and therapeutic spaces and corrections through humane treatment of the prisoners while not compromising on security. Thus impelling them to not only mend their ways, but become responsible human beings, in the outside world.Item MUSIC COMPLEX(UMT, Lahore, 2017) Abdul MajidMusic is composed and performed for many purposes, ranging from aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, or as an entertainment product for the marketplace. As Pakistan, a country in Southern Asia, has a rich culture and heritage. Formerly, a part of 'Hindustan', it became an independent country, but the cultural beliefs and other cultural values were adopted by both the nations. Music in specific has the lead in commonness. Due to globalization, one can easily share and see what things are being proposed, adapted or discovered in different parts of the world, same as the music. Pakistan being one of the versatile countries has a talent of devouring things easily. The type of instruments played, and the number of languages being spoken here are countless which makes Pakistan as optimistic country. The main purpose of this project is to provide opportunity to those people who are interested in moving further with their skills in the field of music. Not just focusing on the temperament of the local region but mastering the western side of the music as well. Music arrived at the forefront of my mind when considering topics I might reference when creating architecture. This undoubtedly happened due to a personal interest I have in music as it lies at the very core of my upbringing. This thesis report progresses in a specific manner such that the special topics are taken into consideration in the beginning and going down further into detailed discussions from then. This is done so, such that one is given a proper understanding to how the design was evolved and what plays the design deciding factors.Item ARTECH Institute for SEN Children(UMT, Lahore, 2017) Arslan AkhterIt is a lonely existence to be a child with a disability which no-one can see or understand, you exasperate your teachers, you disappoint your parents, and worst of all you know that you are not just stupid.” –Susan Hampshire The straight fact is that the physically and mentally disabled in Pakistan do not receive the support that would be common in a society sensitive and compassionate towards their disabled citizens. They are heckled, disrespect and pointed out as different by the population at large. Furthermore our public infrastructure does not incorporate suitable design features to aid the disabled in the public realm thus leaving them at the mercy of difficulties beyond those they are already facing. Worst of all, disabled children suffer greatly in their education due to inadequate facilities, incompetent teachers, deficient teaching methodologies and severely lacking awareness schemes for the general public. It is of utmost importance to address issues regarding the education of special children, not only for the children themselves but the ensure a healthy society and a sustainable economy. Reports by the World Bank, UNDP (United Nations Development Program) and UNICEF )United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) point towards the long term unsustainability of economic growth, unless strategic shifts are instituted to improve social sector performance. At the helm of their efforts is to establish and institute which will serve as the crown jewel of their efforts to counter the challenge of special children education. To provide these children with all the educational & training facilities to enhance their capabilities and rehabilitate them in the society.” Furthermore, it will set the precedent for the design of public infrastructure, which facilitates the disabled in the public realm. The project will be comprised of main school building, college facility, administration block, health center, hostel for children and staff members playing areas, training center etcItem WILDLIDE SANCTUARY(UMT, Lahore, 2017) Hina SajidMy thesis is to bring an idea of modern zoo by reviving an old dead Forest. Through my study of this subject, I intent to design a zoo cum safari by introducing a part of zoo 360 while keeping in mind about the ecological system and zoographical display of exhibits. In order to prevent the animals from being extinct. I am planning to educate public as well as by conserving the species, I am design s space for people around the world. A vet care center is also introduced to the site for the better care of animals and their proper nourishment. A wild life sanctuary depicts the deep relation of wildlife to their home which is break due to urbanization. By the increase of urbanization today. Man is losing its most essential interaction with the natural world. My interest is to create a balance between animals and nature which is not properly developed in our country. Animals required a habitat of their type; to survive it is necessary to give them an atmosphere where they can breed.Item DEPENDENCY TO INDEPENDENCY(UMT, Lahore, 2017) NIHAL IRUMGod has created us to serve others not to divide within ourselves. The needy ones suffer every single day without any delay, they are being shunned by the society, they are tortured mentally and physically without any fear. Therefore there is dismal need to create a platform which could serve them with shelter, food and a much better way of style. The most important thing is that the percentage of poor people is increasing day by day instead of getting decreased. Due to which our country is suffering so much and it is not touching skyline of success and achievements the way it should. The government is not playing its role infact it is not even providing its rights to them as promised. The non-governmental organizations which are working for the rights of needy are not working actively, and if they are working they can’t afford that much. From a list of those NGO’s the only charitable trust which is working round the clock irrespective of cast color and creed is, Edhi foundation which serves the humanity in its pure form. Therefore I am planning to provide a platform which will act as a catalyst to serve the humanity. This platform will be provided through Edhi foundation which will provide shelter, food and a better lifestyle to the people which are in dismal need of help. This platform will not only help them but will also educate them and make them to contribute in the society as well. The goal of this project is to set an example and demonstrate how, even with those difficulties, adolescents can be reinserted back into society successfully, leaving their gloomy past behindItem OLD AGE HOME(UMT, Lahore, 2017)The way we think about our living environment changes with age. The word ‘old age home’ no longer defines a building where older people go to end their days. According to PERKINS EAST MAN Older people want homes that give them independence, choice and the ability to maintain their friendships and family contacts. They do not see their homes simply as a place where they receive health or social care. For architects and designers, and those who commission services, both general and specialized housing, present challenges when designing for care at home. General housing stock is not always fit for purpose and older people’s expectations of specialized housing have changed. And providers of social care are increasingly interested in creating inclusive, non-institutional environments, where residents retain control.Item NEW GWADAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT(UMT, Lahore, 2017) SOHAIB EJAZItem INSTITUTE OF ART AND DESIGN AND REAERCH CENTER(UMT, Lahore, 2017) MARIUM SHAHIDEducational institutions are indicators of the direction in which a culture intends to be headed in. Same is the case with Rahim Yar Khan Railway station, which lacks in many of the services, an ideal railway station must provide to the passengers. Even in some parts of the world, railway stations act as an identity of the city or that particular region. Railway stations act as landmarks. The railway station wears a deserted appearance when all the trains have left. Then there is a dull for some time. At train-time the station begin to hum with life again. This goes on forever. It is the regular feature of a railway station. As the culture of Rahim Yar Khan is rich enough in its norms, it is important to develop or upgrade Rahim yar khan railway station as it plays a vital role in transferring people in and out from the city. Passengers do adopt and leave with whatever they carry from place to place, the present conditions will leave very disappointing effect on them. Providing architectural solutions by developing the existing terminal with consideration of the current scenario as well as foreseeing the future growth of Rahim Yar Khan and to build a new terminal which provides access and security for the passengers who need to get to the multiple platforms without any hassle. All in all giving the passengers a very captivating welcome to the city of Rahim Yar Khan by designing a railway terminal which fulfils international standards.Item BABA GURU NANAK UNIVERSITY(UMT, Lahore, 2017) AHMED BILALIf we observe there are many universities in the big cities like Karachi Islamabad and especially in Lahore. There are many educational institutes and universities but there is also a lack of these type of institutes in small cities and other areas of Punjab which are not well developed so that’s why people from these areas have to travel towards big cities for the purpose of getting education. We must have to provide educational institutes and universities in small cities and towns and as well as these institutes can accommodate the surroundings and small areas which are related with other small cities and towns of Punjab.Item Prison, Yet Not A Prison(UMT, Lahore, 2017-05-12) Haider AliCriminal behavior in juveniles is hard to describe using a definition. Since no agreed definition can be found. But the anti-social acts and behavior of youngsters is often regarded as juvenile delinquency. Adulthood starts from 18 years of age and above, a person who commits a crime and is of or under 18 years of age is termed as a juvenile delinquent. Over centuries, the role of a prison has been that of a dark dungeon, implementing cruel punishments. This has not only made the crime graph go higher but has also destroyed countless lives. This report focuses on rehabilitation through architecture, employing environmental psychology and corrections through humane treatment of the prisoners while not compromising on security. Further, presents an insight in the conditions that prevail, and the number of juvenile prisons in Punjab, Pakistan. The data provides a detailed insight to the facilities provided, design patterns, security and counselling in the juvenile prisons. It further provides a proposed design for a juvenile prison to be built in Lahore, Pakistan. Juvenile schools or prisons lack in number in our country as compared to the crime ratio and they are important as the common incarceration of adults and juveniles together can lead to a greater chance of negative influence on the minors. Punjab has the highest percentage of juvenile offenders in the country and still there is not a single court dedicated exclusively to juvenile cases. Furthermore, there are only 2 juvenile prisons in Punjab which are long-standing and are least suitable for such facilities
