Ananalysis of coherence and cohesion through grecian maxims of relevanceand mannerinessays by pakistani students at undergraduate level
    (UMT.Lahore, 2023) TEHREEMFATIMA
This research aims to examine coherence and cohesion in essays written by undergraduate students in Pakistan through Gricean maxims of relevance and manner presented in 1975. Multiple dimensions are assessed such as coherence, cohesion, sentence structure, repetition, logical progression, cohesive devices, and tense consistency. Based upon an examination of data collected from a sample of 25 participants, the findings of this study indicate that the essays, on the whole, exhibit a reasonable degree of coherence and cohesion but with some specific discernible differences. The enhancement of coherence is attributed to effective sentence structure and cohesive devices, whilst hindrances to coherence arise from repetitive parts and inconsistent tense usage. The results demonstrate that the variables "Cohesion" and "Proper sentence structure" exhibit a substantial negative relationship with coherence. It underscores the need to connect ideas effectively and maintain grammatical accuracy to enhance coherence. On the contrary, the absence of enough cohesive devices has a favorable impact on overall coherence. The analysis reveals notable deviations from a null test value for all categories, emphasizing the uniqueness of these characteristics in the writings. The study provides valuable observations regarding the coherence and cohesion of essays written by undergraduate students from Pakistan.

Popularity of grammar translation method (gtm) over communicative language teaching (clt) in the public schools of kot mominkeywords: english as second language (esl)
    (UMT.Lahore, 2023) M. Arslan Ahsan
The Grammar Translation Method (GTM) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) are compared in this thesis. This study examines secondary school ESL teachers' views on GTM and CLT and the factors that make GTM so popular in language education. The data shows that most ESL teachers in Kot Momin's secondary schools like certain CLT components. They stress the importance of giving students access to information, encouraging English communication, using ordered scrambled sentences to learn a language, using English newspapers to improve reading comprehension, using group work, and encouraging students to take charge of their education. Educators have different views on teaching methods and activities. These findings reveal Kot Momin's ESL instructors' GTM and CLT views. They help us understand language acquisition methods and affect teacher education and professional development in Kot Momin and similar contexts. The study also highlighted why language classrooms use GTM rather than CLT. The beliefs of educators and institutional restrictions are mentioned as influences. Teachers say their contextual language usage and spoken English skills prevent them from implementing CLT. GTM is preferred due to a lack of CLT training, time constraints for creating communicative materials, students' low English language proficiency, resistance to participatory activities, a lack of motivation for communicative competence, and teachers' perceptions of insufficient educational system support. These findings highlight educator beliefs, institutional constraints, and contextual factors in Kot Momin government schools' GTM language instruction preference. The findings show how important these factors are when assessing student acceptance of different teaching methods. If the issues are addressed, Kot Momin's public schools can implement CLT and improve language instruction. These issues include increasing training opportunities, creating time for instructional materials, addressing students' language proficiency and motivation, and improving institutional support.

This project aims to examine students' and instructors' views on Saraiki in ESL classes and how a bilingual approach affects language learning. Teachers and students completed Likert scale questionnaires to collect quantitative data. The findings show that ESL instructors have diverse opinions on Saraiki in education. Many educators support using Saraiki to teach grammar, reading, spoken language, and vocabulary, but others disagree or are neutral. These findings show that educators and other stakeholders need more research and discussion about using Saraiki in ESL classrooms to reach a consensus. These discussions should consider the students' linguistic and cultural backgrounds, language learning goals, language policy, and location. The data show a wide range of student opinions on introducing Saraiki into ESL. Some students are against using Saraiki in various contexts for language learning, but most are in favor. Effective language instruction requires inclusive, supportive, and student-centered environments. If allowed, students' participation in language instruction discussions can help teachers make smart decisions and adapt their instruction to meet their students' needs. This enhances students' language learning. According to the data, students in bilingual classrooms change their perceptions of their English proficiency across a variety of language skills. Despite concerns about listening comprehension and spoken English, students seem more confident in their reading and writing skills. These findings show how much a bilingual approach impacts student language growth. It is important to recognize that rural students and bilingual students may have different English language proficiency challenges and advantages. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding attitudes toward Saraiki language use in Kot Mithan's English as a Second Language classes. Teachers will be better able to incorporate the Saraiki language and improve their students' language learning by having meaningful conversations and considering multiple perspectives. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
    (UMT.Lahore, 2023) Syed Ali Zain-ul-Aibdeen Naqvi
In "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho, the character of Austin uses several illocutionary speech acts that have a significant impact on the story. Illocutionary speech acts are speech acts that are intended to perform an action, rather than simply convey information. One example of Austin's illocutionary speech acts can be seen when he tells the protagonist, Santiago, about the concept of the Personal Legend. This speech act is intended to inspire Santiago to pursue his own Personal Legend and to follow his dreams, which is a crucial theme throughout the novel. Austin's speech acts help to shape the protagonist's understanding of his journey and his purpose in life. Another example of Austin's illocutionary speech acts can be seen when he tells Santiago about the importance of listening to one's heart. This speech act is intended to encourage Santiago to trust his intuition and follow his heart, even when it may not make sense to his rational mind. This advice is crucial to Santiago's journey and helps him to overcome the challenges he faces. Generally, Austin's illocutionary speech acts in "The Alchemist" serve to motivate and inspire the protagonist to pursue his dreams and to trust his intuition. These speech acts play a significant role in shaping the story's themes and are an important element of the novel's narrative structure.

    Embracing linguistic diversity
    (UMT.Lahore, 2023) Faizan Ibrahim
Language diversity is a rich aspect of human culture, yet it often becomes a basis for discrimination, especially for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. In Pakistan, where English is widely taught and used, accent variation has been known to create biases and perpetuate linguistic inequalities. This study aims to explore accent-based discrimination among ESL learners in Pakistan, examining its prevalence, impact on self-confidence, perceptions of prestigious accents, exposure to accents in media, and the role of educational institutions in fostering inclusivity. A quantitative research design was adopted, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 300 Lahore undergraduate students. The questionnaire sought participants' experiences, attitudes, and perceptions related to accent discrimination in the Pakistani context. Statistical techniques, including descriptive statistics, t-tests, and thematic analysis, were utilized to analyze the data and draw meaningful insights. The findings indicate a significant prevalence of accent discrimination among ESL learners in Pakistan, with 60% of respondents reporting experiences of discrimination. British English (26.67%) and American English (33.33%) were perceived as accents that are more prestigious compared to the local Pakistani accent (23.33%). ESL learners who faced discrimination reported lower self-confidence in their English speaking abilities, highlighting the adverse impact of accent-based biases on self-esteem and language learning experiences. Furthermore, participants were exposed to diverse accents in media, with 63.33% encountering various accents daily or weekly. However, the specific portrayal of accents in media was not explored in this study. Participants recommended incorporating accent variation into educational curricula, conducting inclusivity workshops, and fostering open dialogue to combat accent discrimination. The study reveals the pressing need to address accent-based discrimination and foster an inclusive environment that celebrates linguistic diversity among ESL learners in Pakistan. Educational institutions play a crucial role in promoting inclusivity, and media representations can influence attitudes towards accents. Collaborative efforts among educators, policymakers, media, and society are essential to create a more equitable and tolerant environment where accent-based discrimination is eliminated, allowing ESL learners to thrive in their language-learning journey.

The cause of language anxiety in undergraduates
    (UMT.Lahore, 2023) Tasmia Nazar
Learning English as a second language enhances students' learning abilities at the school level. The focus of this research is to find out the levels of anxiety among language learners. To assess anxiety levels, I distributed a questionnaire among three hundred students. I utilized FLCAS research to substantiate my findings. My research is based on identification of the sources and causes of anxiety, propose applicable solutions, and explore the roles of teachers and students in addressing this issue. Graphs, aided by SPSS, were employed to present my research findings, specifically examining anxiety levels at the intermediate level. In our country and various others, t-tests are utilized to compare anxiety levels between students in private and public sectors. Faculty members partake in numerous training sessions to actively contribute to the reduction of anxiety levels among undergraduates. It is the responsibility of both educators and institutions to address this significant issue, as it hampers learning capacity and undermines students' confidence. To yield more precise results, conducting research at higher levels and in diverse settings is necessary. Promoting English speaking outside the classroom environment enhances students' ability to confidently address the public, subsequently fostering their ease in presenting various topics before their peers. In conclusion, I firmly believe that this issue can be resolved; however, it demands sustained dedication and diligent efforts.
