Testing writing skills communicatively at primary level
    (UMT, Lahore, 2004) Tehmina Nazir
This study was basically an attempt to determine teachers' objectives of test and to develop writing skill tests based on communicative approach for primary level. After developing the tests, it was piloted to find its difficulty level, validity and reliability. Communicative writing skill tests were intended to be a measure of how the testees were able to use language in real life situations. In testing productive skills, emphasis was placed on appropriateness rather than on ability to form grammatically correct sentences. Appropriate technique to obtain information in this thesis researcher had used the methods of informal interviews and questionnaire with teachers and written test conducted from 1 to V. Judgments are also important component of evaluation. Judgment includes information used and the referent to which the information is complete. Grading is the most used and common technique for making judgments and interpreting the results. Researcher had also used grading system of mean, mode and standard deviation to determine the effect of difficulty level on different classes and to put value on the level of understanding among students within a same class. If value of standard deviation was on higher side it showed group of students had heterogeneous ability: some were good or some were poor students in a class of a subject. Grading is normally done through the use of normal referenced test. The researcher had used tests as research instrument to judge their difficulty level in writing skills. Ranking of students in a class was also done to determine the ability of students in top half and bottom half. If spread of the score/range of score was very wide it indicated level of understanding of a subject in a class was very diversified: few students were very excellent and others had shown very poor result. The communicative teaching style was not good enough to be understandable for whole class

To investigate the needs of the students of the regular 'ma programs at 'sea' at 'UMT' in order to develop an academic writing skills syllabus
    (UMT, Lahore, 2004) Adeema Ilyas
Writing is the most important skill in any one's academic life. Without having competence in the writing skills it is almost impossible to complete education in an effective way. As far as the students of Master Programs at the School of Education and Arts (SEA) at the University of Management and Technology (UMT) are concerned, they really need good writing skills to complete their education in an effective manner. Writing tasks which are given to the students during the period of study at UMT are really a nightmare for most of the students as most of the students face difficulties in accomplishing the writing tasks assigned to them. In this research thesis, the needs of the students have been analyzed by using three research instruments. Firstly, a questionnaire-based survey was carried out in which the students responded to both quantitative and qualitative questions. It helped in the initial need assessment. Secondly, an interview of the teachers was conducted. Thirdly, a test was administered in the class to assess the actual needs of the students. After analyzing the needs of the students, a syllabus outline has been designed for the teachers to effectively teach the students in order to improve their writing skills
