Item ROLE OF MEDIA IN WAR AND PEACE: AN ANALYSIS OF INDIA-PAKISTAN CONTESTATIONS(UMT.lahore, 2024) Sundus Basharat AhmadExploring the media's role in India-Pakistan contestations is essential for gaining insights into how information dissemination can either escalate hostilities or play a constructive role in promoting dialogue, understanding, and, ultimately, peaceful resolution. This study has analysed the intricate interplay between the two countries from 2018 to 2021, focusing on the media's role. Through the exploration of print and electronic media, it has examined critical events such as Operation Swift Retort, the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir, and the establishment of the Kartarpur Corridor in 2019. The research has delved into existing journalism practices and prospects for fostering Indo-Pak peace. Utilising the Peace and War Journalism Framework, qualitative framing analysis, and elite interviews have provided practical insights into the media's potential contribution to regional peace. The dataset comprises editorials, op-eds, and commentaries from four Indian and four Pakistani newspapers and prime-time headlines from three TV news channels in India and Pakistan, supplemented by 22 elite interviews. The study found that media framing of events like Operation Swift Retort and the revocation of Article 370 largely mirrored nationalistic and conflict-oriented narratives, exacerbating tensions between India and Pakistan. However, coverage of the Kartarpur Corridor highlighted its potential for fostering interfaith harmony and cooperation, contrasting with the broader trend of sensationalism and misinformation. Despite a public desire for stability and cooperation, media sensationalism and misinformation continue to hinder constructive dialogue and resolution efforts.
