This is possible due to the revolution in the field of telecommunication and by the advent of Fiber optic cable, over which signals are in optic form rather than electric form. End user can access the above mentioned services by two flavors of Fiber access network. In first ( HFC) both fiber and coaxial are used to make the network more economical for the operator as well as for the subscriber while in FTTH or passive optical network (PON) fiber is installed all the way to home. Both networks have their own advantages and drawbacks which will be in scope of this thesis. Video is one of most important part of the triple play as it required more bandwidth. So by covering the need of its distribution it is then easier to send voice or data over the network. Data or information that is transmitted often encounters a signal altering physical channel (channel includes coaxial cable, optical fiber or wireless channel). Structure of the HFC and FTTH (access networks) and then all protocols required to distribute the video channels, will also be present in upcoming pages.Item Comparative study of TV drama viewership in Lahore(UMT, Lahore, 2013) Rabiya Khan and Kamran All KhanThis study aims at finding the viewership of TV dramas in Lahore, the capital city of the largest populated Punjab province of Pakistan The study is based on survey methodology and the data was collected through the questionnaire comprising 14 questions. A sample size of 100 respondents aged 20-50 was with equal representation of males and females from all walks of life was taken. The study found that the love affair dramas are highly popular among the TV dramas viewers, as compared to dramas based on social issues, home politics and comedy subjects. Comedy dramas are second most popular among citizens of Lahore, especially males.Item Microcontroller based intelligent hybrid energy source and grid integration(UMT, Lahore, 2013) Fahad AliThis research work presents a fuel cell/battery model based intelligent hybrid energy source connected with a micro grid, which would resolve power intermittency and variability issues. A hybrid energy source (HES) composed of more than one storage devices that when incorporated, overcome limitations in either and can supply both high power and energy densities. The model proposed in this research work is composed of a battery bank and a stack of fuel cells, controlled by a microcontroller (AVR). The AVR microcontroller senses the load properties and then operates the energy devices accordingly as per required demands of the load. The limitations like economics, fuel flexibility, efficiency & reliability can be handled by this hybrid energy source. Different topologies can be considered in the designing of a hybrid energy source. The proposed model is very smart in the monitoring and control of the quality and stability of power delivered. This proposed model is integrated with the electric grid, which controls the voltage and frequency, further smoothes the variability of the generated power. This model mainly consists of digital controller (AVR Microcontroller), DC/DC and DC/AC converters that efficiently manage the power flow to the both DC and AC sides. Simulation results are given to show the overall system performance including the power management of the system.Item Medical image compression with lossless region of interest using new method: image to text compression(UMT, Lahore, 2015) MUHAMMAD ANAS JAVAIDThe rapid development in medical imaging provided us new knowledge about diseases and complex structure of human body. New technology is being developed to help improve global healthcare system. The aim of this research is to develop an efficient algorithm to compress grayscale medical images at the cost of speed and memory. We have developed lossless, lossy and hybrid image compression algorithms. A group of MRI, X-Ray, CT-scan, Ultra sound, Angiograms and Mammograms images were used for experiments. The performance of purposed algorithm was compared with a state of art JPEG2000 compression technique. The lossy compression technique follows some JPEG base line standard. The overall compression ratio is 2 times better than JPEG with same PSNR. The lossless technique shows 1.2 times better compression ratio than PNG. In medical images only a small portion is diagnostically important hence in ROI diagnostically important area is compressed lossless and remaining area is compressed lossy. Hybrid compression is based on Region of Interest (ROI) coding technique. The overall compression ratio is 4 times better than JPEG and 9 times better than JPEG2000 with same PSNR. Proposed techniques perform well regarding to the compression ratio and quality of reconstructed image, making them suitable for medical purposes.Item Design and simulation of a demand side management algorithm in a proposed smart grid environment for Pakistan(UMT, Lahore, 2015) MAJID ALIThe electrical energy cannot be stored in large scale because we have no resource to store it in bulk. It has to be produced, transmitted, distributed and used instantly. However the nature of the load is variable with respect to time. The power generating plants are designed for maximum demand. It means the gap between peak load and the average load is high which results in greater per unit cost. The peak load increases suddenly in peak hours so we need to install large power generating plants to meet peak demand. It is not possible for developing countries to install such large power generating units due to limited financial resources. The proposed solution of this problem is Demand Side Management (DSM) technique. In Demand Side Management (DSM) technique the load is shifted to off peak hours which results in financial benefit to residential customers. DSM is an important part of Smart Grid (SG) which is used to shift load to off peak timings as well as reshape load curve. As a result, importance of SG increases and there is a decrease in per unit energy cost. However this research thesis revolves around DSM load shifting techniques for only flexible devices. The flexible devices should be shifted to off peak period. “The Day Ahead Shifting” technique is proposed in this research thesis to minimize the above said problem significantly. Mathematical modelling and simulation in this research thesis are based on residential load during the spring season in Pakistan. This algorithm is developed in Matlab software. The findings of this thesis suggest that DSM approach attains significant energy savings and objective curve.Item Harmonic analysis of grid connected photo voltaic system(UMT, Lahore, 2015) Omar Raza Khan and Awais RehmaniSince nonrenewable energy sources are depleting extremely fast. Pakistan is in grave danger in the next couple of decades, so if we don’t take our mind towards renewable energy sources like sun, then there may not be any electricity in Pakistan to lamp our houses. The aim of this project is to provide a solution for the energy crisis that is not only cost effective, but also easy to implement. The project focuses on maximizing the solar power generation through batter inverter control and working. This project provides a way to keep grid electricity usage to minimum and utilize the solar energy as much as possible, and in case of extreme conditions of weather a battery plan is also available. As well as smart grid photo voltaic system connected to the power grid in this case there is need to minimize the harmonic distortion to standard level which depends on different technique of inverter control.Item Analysis of distribution substation using facts devices(UMT, Lahore, 2015) Hafiz Fuad UsmanElectrical energy has a dynamic role in our society as it is very important in the economic development of any country. In order to fulfill the demand there must be balance between power generation and load demand. In electric power systems, non-linear loads produce harmonics due to which the system undergoes high line losses and un-stability. For power system stability and reliability, static var compensators (SVCs) and Harmonic Filter (HF) are used to eliminate the problem arising due to under voltages and non-linearity at the loaded busbars. The model is developed and analyzed using Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP). The results clearly show the effectiveness of SVCs and HF in making power distribution system reliable.Item Home automation using raspberry pi(UMT, Lahore, 2016) BURHAN MAHMOOD MUGHALHome automation is a method to control any household appliances through a remote control or through complete automation. The world’s first home automation was commenced after 1898 with the invention of labor saving machines like washing machines due to Nikola Tesla’s contributions since, by then, he had patented a remote control device that could be used to control vessels and/or vehicles. Some home automation applications can be considered as stand-alone since they do not communicate, e.g. garage door sensors, while others are networked to be a part of Internet of Things and are used in transferring of data. But even still, majority of these home automation systems that are available for our ease consist of a group of products designed to work together, while others may only work in stand-alone. Home automation provides us with the access to control devices in our house through any hand held device. Thermostats and/or sprinkler systems can even be considered as a part of home automation devices since they can be programmed to work with minimum host intervention but, to be more precise, home automation actually describes a house in which nearly everything, ranging from lights to electric sockets, is hooked up and can be controlled through a remote network. From a security point of view, this would also include an alarm system, windows monitoring or any device or system that can be hooked up to a sensor that would be able to relay information. The greatest advantage for a home automation system is its unmatched energy savings feature. At the most basic level, home automation allows for scheduled programming of sensors so that we can use just enough energy that may be needed and not more. When need be, electrical outlets can also be automatically powered own to save power during daytime.Item Raspberry pi based smart web server(UMT, Lahore, 2016) Qasim Qadeer, Hafiz Muhammad Abid Ishaq and Husain HammadWe, the people are not by any means the only ones who are enlisted during childbirth. Even though Pakistan has many production units, we still lack in meeting the yearly demand. Hybrid power system is a system that infuses our natural resources with renewable energy to decrease the initial and final cost of production. My project is the design and simulation of the national grid with three major renewable energy resources. It helps lower the cost of production by 2/3rd of the original cost. It also helps save the environment from CO2emissions causing a reduction in the chances of global warmingpermitting us a clean and green environment. My project is the integration of Solar, Wind and Biogas with the national grid system. I have solar as my primary source, followed by wind as my secondary and prioritizing battery as my last. When all else fails, I will use biogas for the battery to recharge it and supply enough power for the whole integrated system. The aim of my thesis is to design and simulate the Hybrid Power System in such a way that the efficiency or performance of the system increases.Item Math-solutions(UMT, Lahore, 2016) Ahmed AbdullahThe pivot of the project is to provide web based highly interactive and online sessions to those students who have been facing difficulties in their curriculum. This project helps the students to find the conceptual solution of their queries for math. Moreover, students can improve and polish their math skills, through communication with the trainer. There will be an individual trainer for individual student, for the sake of the theoretical learning. The student will show more concentration on each step of the solution. The communication between the student and the Instructor will be according to the specific topic. Student will post the question by taking the snapshot of the question and post on this system. At that time there will be a possible Instructor available who will respond for that post. It is mandatory to write here that student cannot interact easily online with the Instructor because there is not any online platform for the students where the quires can be resolved on the spot. They have to wait mail replies of concerning Instructor. Thus, the have to wait to get conceptual solutions for their enquiries. The main intention of this project is to provide online platform to the students where they can easily find the solutions of their questions at the spot. Through this platform students can enhance their learning and improve their skills by the interaction with the Instructor. In that session the Instructor will teach the student intensely. This project provides the teacher and student portal from where student and teacher can enter in the website. Student can sign-up after that he/she will enter and buy courses which one he wants to study. Teacher can sign-up after that he can launch courses and make offer to the registered student. Admin will define the role of user and tell what they allowed to do.Item Transverse electric modes of asymmetric dielectric slab waveguide(UMT, Lahore, 2016) Mohsin PervaizThis report discusses the TE types of unequal slab waveguide. The Eigen value equation and dispersion relation TE types of unequal slab waveguide are derived. The relations of asymmetry, effective thickness and fraction of power propagating in core layer are also derived. The number of showed types and their authentic tables and other parameters of waveguide are numerically computed using Mode Solver method. The guided and radiated modes profiles are simulated using same method. The propagation of guided modes along the core layer of waveguide is simulated and analyzed using Beam Propagation Method.Item Implementation and analysis of economic load dispatch using krill herd algorithm(UMT, Lahore, 2016) Muhammad Umar ZahidThe importance of economic load dispatch (ELD) problems in electric power operation emphasizes to be solved effectively so that an efficient plan for power generation could be developed for a given load demand. In real life scenarios, non-linearity and complexity of ELD cost function make it a hideous task to be solved effectively. In this research work, a nature inspired optimization algorithm (Krill Herd Algorithm (KHA)) is efficiently implemented for different ELD problems involving complex and convex functions. Different test systems of thermal power generating units involving active power limits, transmission loss, and valve point loading constraints are considered for the implementation of the optimization algorithm. A statistical comparison of the results obtained by the implemented algorithm with different optimization techniques already developed is also made to analyze the efficiency of the KHA. By comparing the outcomes, it is observed that the implemented KHA is far better in robustness and efficiency than other previously implemented algorithms. Fuel cost optimization response of KHA is also better than other algorithms in studies. Simulations of implemented algorithm for different test systems are obtained by MATLAB. Inclusion of different real time constraints involved in ELD problems makes this implementation an effective and reliable factor in practical field.Item Solar heated thermo electric generator(UMT, Lahore, 2016) Mudassar Ali, Saad Abdul Waheed and Safi Ullah KhanThere are two main sources for the generation of electricity. It includes fossil fuels and renewable energy resources. Fossil fuels are commonly used for 67 % generation of electricity according to Energy Information administration report 2012. Fossil fuels have limits, they are not good for the environment, and will deplete one day. We have to look for some other ways to generate electricity. Renewable energy resources are widely available. Thermoelectric generators are electrical devices which convert the heat difference straight into electricity. TEG is kept hotter from one side and other side is on low temperature. The result is electrical output. This project aims to study this material in details to generate electricity from this latest technology. This project is cheaper and efficiently as compared to other renewable forms of energy.Item Differential drive robot using global poistioning system(UMT, Lahore, 2016) Jawad Zafar, Ch. Taimoor Ahmad and Hareema AhsanThe differential drive robot is a basic type of mobile robots. It has two motors on each side of the robot body. These motors can move independently so we can control the movement of the robot by varying the speed of the motors. The way differential drive robot works, there is right wheel and left wheel with velocity that can be controlled. So, for instance, if they're turning at the same rate, the robot is moving straight ahead. If one wheel is turning slower than another, then the robot is going to be turning towards the direction in which the slower wheel is. So, this a way of actually being able to make the robot move round. Our project is based on differential drive movement. The project name is Differential Drive Robot Using Global Positioning System. In this project arduino is used to control the movement of the robot. Arduino is a small credit card size computer that has external General Purpose Inputs/Outputs (GPIO) which can be used in different electronics projects. These General Purpose Inputs/Outputs can be programmed according to the project requirements. The main task of the robot is to reach its destination avoiding obstacles by getting longitude and latitude from cell phone. The destination is given to the robot with the help of cell phone. The arduino is like a brain of the robot. Ultrasonic sensors are used to avoid obstacles and a compass is also used to turn the robot at a specific angle. Raspberry pi controlled through Wi-Fi from the laptop for making videos.Item MPLS VPN(UMT, Lahore, 2016) MUHAMMAD SHAHZAD, HAYAT ULLAH and ZAKI NAWAZMPLS is proposed to replace the frame relay technology. MPLS use for forwarding the traffic on the basic of Labels so that effectively increase the efficiency of device and easy to manageable. MPLS give support of load balancing (if two ISP are connected one is active and other is standby but in MPLS we can use both link for traffic). MPLS use for geographical area (connectivity of different sites of same company located at different even countries).MPLS support Quality of service (voice, video etc). Virtual private network can be make in MPLS.MPLS belongs to layer 2.5 layer mid between network (Routing) and data link (Switching) layer. MPLS work for speedy network of labeling increase reliability and easy to manage. MPLS can work for same subnets of sites means every sites contain the same IP address MPLS run between them by creating VPN tunnels through which they can communicate with each other like they are directly connected. Traffic engineering application of MPLS is used for manage the traffic through which you done for specific route passes through specific link of having mention bandwidth if bandwidth increase then not allow the specific route to carry on that specific link. MPLS can be use for ATM on bridge purpose like in banking sector ATM link if ATM one link goes down MPLS have standby link immediately up that standby link. So MPLS have a lot of benefit over other technology in recent years.Item Solar auto irrigation system (SAIS)(UMT, Lahore, 2016) NAEEM SHEHZAD, ABDUR REHMAN SIDDQUI and RIZWAN AYUBAgriculture is an important source in a country like Pakistan and many Pakistani’s earn through farming. The weather in Pakistan keeps on change and people some time face lack of rain which result in wastage of crops. Also there are some lands in which the water is available in excess. So to come across this problem we have designed a system which control the excess water in the crops and stops the pumps when the water is not required in the crop. Basically this system is built and undergoes to a process and Works on commands given by the Arduino connected. In this system we are using the power from solar panels as there is shortage of electricity and Pakistan is in Energy crisis as well. Using this system helps to use Alternate source of energy and fulfill shortage of electricity. The sensors are connected in the crops field and keeps on checking the moisture of the field as soon as the crop requires the water the sensors will send the command to Arduino which starts the functioning of the pumps and as soon as the crops are irrigated with the water the Pump will be shut down and the excess to water will be finished. Furthermore description of the system is explained in the report below. Moreover a GSM module is also used which will inform the farmer about the on/off of the pump and flow of water through an SMS.
