The Department of Islamic Thought and Civilization (DITC) was established in January 2008. DITC offers MS/MPhil in Islamic Thought and Civilization followed by a PhD program. The unique feature of this MPhil program is that it is opening its doors to all those who have completed 16 years of education in any discipline whether it is social or natural sciences, engineering, medicine, commerce, Islamic studies, languages, etc.

    The miracle of prophet muhammad's (peace be upon him) ascension: a comparative study of the views of said nursi and allama iqbal

    In his yearning for truth Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) reached the highest heavens. This miraculous journey tells that among all the creatures of Allah, humans are the best and the superior creation. The Ascension of Prophet (Mi’raj) is a very important topic discussed in ‘Risale-I Nur’. Bediuzzaman Said Nursi pointed out that the profound truth of Ascension (Mi’raj) was a supreme miracle of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) in the world of the inner dimensions of things. Through this clear wonder, the sainthood of his prophethood was proved. This topic has also been discussed in detail in Allama Muhamma Iqbal’s ‘Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam’ and ‘Javed Nama’. He learns from the miracle of Ascension (Mi’raj) of Muhammad (Peace be upon him) that "Heaven" is within the reach of mankind. According to him, return of the Prophet from highest heavens discloses the psychological difference between the prophetic and the mystic types of consciousness. The aim of this paper is to compare the views of these two most influential figures of twentieth century Muslim scholarship about the significance of the miracle of Ascension (Mi’raj).

    Islam has prohibited Riba due to its disadvantages such as, accumulation of wealth by a group of society,inflation ,trade cycle and poverty etc.Due to various disadvantages of Riba,interest free banking industry is growing rapidly all over the world as well as in Pakistan.State bank efforts for the promotion of Islamic banking are large focused on providing the requisite financial infrastructure in shape of Shariah compliance,legaly,regulatory and supervisory framework. The sole purpose of conventional banking is to make money for the banking institute by lending out capital at interest, where in Islamic financing is always based on illiquid an asset that is a feature of the transaction.Profit to Islam financing is generated through bonafide sale of these assets.Islamic bankes are introducing Islamic mode of financing such as Murabaha,Ijara,Bai Mujjal,Bai Salam,Istasna, Musharaka and Mudaraba .Murabaha and Diminishing musharaka have remaind the most favoured mode of finance of all Islamic Banking Institutions not only in Pakistan but at the global level as well. However,it is important to note that mudaraba and musharaka have small share in overall financing portfolio. For the development of Islamic banking,it is indispensable to promote mudaraba and musharaka based mode of financing.

    Pre-requisites of muslim-christian relations in 21st century

    Muslims and Christians have been involved in exchanges over matters of faith and morality since the dawn of Islam. Attitudes between these faiths today are deeply coloured by the legacy of past encounters, and often preserve centuries-old negative views. The interest of the Muslims and Christians in understanding each other is also phenomenal in history. In view of this scenario, this paper attempts to propose some reflections on Muslim-Christian Relations in the 21st Century in the view of these questions: What kind of relations does Muslims and Christians want in this century? What are some of the obstacles and challenges to be considered? And what steps can be taken to overcome these obstacles or meet these challenges? These questions have been answered in this paper for the kind of Muslim-Christian relations to be anticipated for and worked for.

    Philosophy of death in the western philosophical and islamic traditions: a case study of heidegger.

    “Death” has been an important theme of exploration in religions, philosophies and among common men as well. All agreed on its inevitability but anticipation and attitude towards acceptance of death has been discussed differently in philosophy and religion. The discourse on death has been an important aspect of Western philosophical tradition since ancient times which is clearly lacking in modern philosophy except in Schopenhauer’s pessimism and then again noticeable in the existentialist enterprise. However, among existentialists, Heidegger is distinguished by treating death as his personal commitment. By avoiding any transcendental explanation, Heidegger presented an ontological inquiry into the nature of death. Interwoven with complicated terminology, Heidegger personalized death with freedom to choose one’s way of dying which he characterized as authentic-being-towards-death. His emphasis on freedom gave the human valiant godly status, fearless, making new discoveries, inventions and defining his way of dying. His fellow existentialists, such as Sartre, criticized his philosophy of death. On the other hand, the nature of death being discussed in Islam is different. Islam personalizes death but gives the authority of ceasing life in the hand of God. By emphasizing the importance of the belief on Judgment Day, Islamic teachings hold a person accountable for his/her deeds before God and provokes him/her to be moderate and pious in this world which will end one day. The paper is an attempt to comprehend the key differences between Western philosophical tradition and Islamic tradition in the discourse and understanding of death.
