    Book review: islami muaashiyaat
(University of Management and Technology, 2011) Rana Zamin Abbas
This valuable and absorbing book brings out facts not generally discussed in the field of economics. It presents complex ideas of Islamic Economics from the Quranic and Hadith perspective in a literary and lucid style. Sometimes novice Urdu reader is digressed, but the author’s scholarly artistic style keeps the reader engaged to the end. Gilani begins with factors of production, capital and Quran, labor and Quran, and world as a system of earning bread and butter, equal rights of men and women in the field of economics and then logically links these with prerequisites by mentioning just two words “guardian scholar” (Hafeez o Aleem). In fact, Prophet Hadhrat Yousaf introduced himself to the Egyptian King saying “I am Hafeez o Aleem, so appoint me as a custodian of your lands.” These two words are hardly found in the vocabulary of economic scholars.

Effect of corporate alienation on managerial decision making
(2013) Rana Zamin Abbas; Muhammad Rizwan Junaid; Muhammad Razzaq Athar; Zulfqar Ahmad
This study revolves around the core process of decision making in an organization keeping on board the middle management tier which is involved mostly in decision making. In every passing day more and more mangers are coming across different personal problems; and even with strong academic qualifications and flair towards offering their best they are finding no place for themselves in this busy and dynamic corporate world. Organizational structure and design are the main causes that make their options miserable and leave no place to run and room to hide. They lose happiness, completeness and confidence and they hit back the society as an alien soul without any defined objective and definite purpose. The causes are studied here in the perspective of a continuous process of decision making which is the most important of all tasks a manager performs.

Exploring the link between foreign direct investment, multinational enterprises and spillover effects in developing economies
(CCSE, 2012) Abdur Rahman Malik; Chaudhry Abdul Rehman; Muhammad Ashraf; Rana Zamin Abbas
Multinational enterprises exist because they hold certain competitive advantages over their local counterparts and affect local economies through their spillover effects. Research streams exploring the raison d’ etre and consequences of MNEs are quite distant and remote. This paper analyzes and integrates these two streams of literature, i.e. the competitive advantages that MNEs hold and their spillover effects in developing countries. The paper proposes a relationship and predicts the nature of spillover effects on the basis of competitive advantages of MNEs. This paper can guide the policymakers of developing countries to differentiate between the FDI that is good for their countries and FDI that weakens the already fragile economies of developing countries. The paper also opens a new avenue for the researchers by pointing towards a potential connection between MNEs’ competitive advantages and their spillover effects for the local economies. The relationship between FDI and competitive advantages of MNEs has rarely been researched previously and thus this paper contributes significantly to the existing literature.

Extending Kahn's model of personal engagement and disengagement at work” with reference to existential attributes: A case study of HR managers in Pakistan
(Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2014) Rana Zamin Abbas; Hasan Sohaib Murad; Naveed Yazdani; Ali Asghar
Purpose – This study seeks to explore the existential meaningfulness of HR managers' work. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of four existential attributes that are death, responsibility, alienation and meaningfulness, on the work of HR managers. The study also asserts that the work of HR managers has an existential dimension to it. It also argues that HR managers have human qualities. They react to human predicament and need emotional identification with their work and organization. Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on the responses of HR managers developed on the basis of an interview guide specifically designed for this purpose. The data have been collected through extensive and in-depth field interactions with HR managers working in diverse organizations. The research approach taken here is to focus on the discrete moments of role performance of HR managers that represent microcosms of the larger complexity. Those moments are windows into the multiplicity of factors that are constantly relevant to person-role dynamics. Focusing on specific moments of work role performance of HR managers is like using the zoom lens of a camera: a distant stationary image is brought close and revealed as a series of innumerable leaps of engagement and falls of disengagement. Findings – The study brings out the emotional and human dilemmas of HR managers working in public and private sector organizations. While discussing and linking Kahn's model with Sartrean thoughts can provide unique perspective within the strategic human resource management especially in Pakistani organizations which was missing not only in Kahn's model but also in management literature. Originality/value – The study makes a fresh inquiry into the nature of HRM and the existential realities experienced by the HR managers at work place. The study is unique because of its extensive field interactions based on a well-designed interview guide hitherto unapplied in the organization studies.

From modernity to postmodernity: a historical discourse on western civilization
(2011) Naveed Yazdani; Hasan Sohaib Murad; Rana Zamin Abbas
This paper traces the historical discourse of Western Civilization from the period of Modernity to Postmodernity. Major political, social, moral, and scientific shifts occurred in the Western Civilization during Modernity because of the maturation of underpinning utilitarian and materialistic ethics. Postmodernity is a critique on the ideologies of modernity. The identifiable difference between the two lies in the nature of discourse. The discourse of modernity rests on the transcendent criteria such as ‘progress’ and ‘reason’. Postmodern discourse, on the other hand, analyzes social life in terms of paradox and indeterminacy and rejects all metanarratives and overarching guiding principles, religion, science, objectivity, rationality and the notion of truth. Yet the two are closely related and complement each other by sharing a deep commitment and affinity to empiricism, concrete forms and reductionism.

The notion of similarity in economic decision making of scores of the organizations round the globe is an outcome of the input that is precisely and principally all common [Information and Technology sources, market trends, demand and supply curves, power of purchasing, currency valuation etc] and facilitate the organizational decision making that seems rational and anticipated. Herbert A. Simon, famous renowned Economist, a Noble Laureate clarifies that economic sciences focus upon one primary aspect of Man and that is his power of reasoning and its application on allocation of resources, especially at the time of scarcity (Simon, 1978). (Centre for Promoting Ideas, USA, 2012) Muhammad Rizwan Junaid; Tahseen Mahmood Aslam; Muhammad Razzaq Athar; Nazir Ahmad Malik; Rana Zamin Abbas
This paper encompasses and enfolds the decay and gradual decline in mental abilities of Managers who are busy in serving Organizations round the globe. It is being felt that companies are mobilizing their Human Resources in such a manner that this resource seems busy in generating hefty profits for them, however, the paid cost is heavy enough to ignore and whole society is slowly but persistently marching towards a dead end. This dead end leads to their personal failure in society, family, friends, social circles and finally in the organizations as well, by every passing day, we are running faster than before in the very direction of being mechanical. The output is justifying their existence, their worth is calculated in terms of financial gains and their presence is gauged through quantifiable meters. It is not thought that they are human beings, they have a personality, they are thinking being and they cannot rather must not be treated as machines. Unfortunately, it is what we are and the lasting, atrocious and terrible effect of this intellectual transition is hunting their inner selves. The sole purpose of this paper is to highlight those areas that provide ‗Food of thought‘ to an individual acting in his/her capacity as Manager in an organization. The missing links and after effects of these missing, We need to think it over and over again as what is being missed cannot be gained back and what is being gained cannot be saved for ever. The loss is much more than the profits.

The principle ideologies of Islam are universal as the Holy Prophet(pbuh) was the last in the list and series of Messengers sent by GOD. Round the globe the level of uncertainty is on the rise, unrest in many countries and political instability has turned the corporate Managers into money minting machines and companies are trying to squeeze the last drop of blood out of their bodies in order to earn more. A Manager must be a role model and if Ethics is compromised then no organization would be able to survive in the long run and Islamic Managerial Ethics provides the foundation for framing this role model.
