Beyond the scene: an analysis of identity crisis of bts from postcolonial perspective
    (UMT Lahore, 2021) Nida Fatima
This thesis aims to probe the multi-layered contesting images and tags that are associated with Bangtan Sonyeondan, a South Korean music group, a global phenomenon and a representative face of Korean popular music in the western music industry. By using theoretical frameworks of Postcolonialism, this qualitative research attempts to explore the journey of BTS’ popularity and their fandom called Adorable Representative M.C for Youth or ARMY as a symbol of resistance against the dominant cultural powers of the west, their struggle to know who they are as individuals coming from the periphery and how the western world sees them as the Others or different in terms of being inferior because of the preconceived notions of K-pop, a loosely used term for a sub-category of Hallyu or Korean wave which has marked a great cultural impact on the world and an economic impact on South Korea. The conclusion highlights that the success of BTS is responsible to create a liminal space or a contact zone that allows for self-reflexivity on the formation of identities and subversion of the Oriental stereotypes and western hegemony about the musical scene of K-pop in general and BTS in particular so to allow a (re)imagining of who they are and where they come from and what they can potentially be as artists in the future.
