Comparative Study of the Strategies of Jamat-e-Islami Pakistan (JIP) and Justice and Development Party Turkey (AKP)
    (UMT, Lahore, 2020) Muhammad Rafi
Islamic activism is under radar of international academia since 1970s. Many contending views have been expressed by different circles on the phenomenon, however, still it is perceived as a negative development by many of the policy makers in the West. Mostly it is considered monolithic, totalitarian, anti-democratic, anti-western, against modernity and opposed to universal human rights. Recently there have been considerable efforts to contest this perception, especially through thick description of the Islamic actors. These studies have found many flaws in the prevailing essentialist views of this activism. Rather many similarities have been noted among the social and political actors worldwide. The present study was carried out on two of the prominent Islamic actors of the Islamic world i.e. Jama‘at-e-Islami Pakistan (JIP) and Justice and Development Party Turkey (AKP). It was to explore their views on democracy, women‘s role in public sphere, interaction with the West and the secular elements in their own countries. Moreover, it was to study the transformation of their policies on these issues with the passage of time.
