The role of empathy in second language learning

This study intends to investigate how learners' positive attitudes towards L2 learning can be influenced by their capacity for empathy. Students are more likely to be motivated to study the language and communicate with native speakers when they have empathy for them. Empathy can aid L2 learning in a number of different ways. First, empathy can aid learners in comprehending native speakers' communication intent. Learners are better able to comprehend the speaker's emotional state and the significance of their words when they can empathize with them. Growing interest has been shown in the use of empathy when learning a second language (L2) in recent years. Second, empathy can assist students in resolving issues with communication. When there is a breakdown in communication, students can use empathy to try to comprehend the speaker's point of view and to find a solution. According to a recent study, there is no statistically significant difference in the functions of empathy between male and female L2 learners. This shows that both men and women can benefit from developing L2 empathy. Recent years have seen overall, the data indicates that empathy is important for learning a second language. Learners can increase their L2 competency by comprehending the emotional condition of native speakers and by cultivating a good attitude towards L2 learning.
