Item Doomscrolling, digital empathy, emotional dampening, and mental health problems in gen-z(UMT, Lahore, 2025) Laiba Labeeb Bajwa; Maheer Saltah Butt; Aiman IrshadThe study aims to explore the association among doomscrolling, digital empathy, emotional dampening, and mental health problems in Gen-Z. Correlational research design, purposive and quota sampling strategy was employed. Data was collected from both private and public sector university students, having sample size of 250 participants (N=250), with equal number of males and females (125 each) with age range 18-25. The data collection protocol included a permission letter, consent form, demographic sheet, doomscrolling scale (DS), digital communication and empathy scale (DCES), difficulty in emotional regulation scale (DERS), and depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21). IBM- SPSS statistics was used to run statistical analysis. Analyses showed that doomscrolling, digital empathy, and emotional dampening have a significant positive relationship with mental health problems. The results showed that females scored higher than males in digital empathy, and public university students exhibited greater emotional dampening than those in private universities. Additionally, significant differences in mental health problems were found across birth orders. The implications of this research will help understand the impact of doomscrolling on Gen Z’s emotional regulation and mental health, guiding clinical psychologists in developing targeted youth-centered interventions, urging tech developers and policymakers to promote healthier digital environments through content moderation and social media breaks.
