Item Family environment, shame proneness and academic competence in university students(UMT, Lahore, 2024) Ali Akbar Hussain; Aman Ullah Khan; Syeda Malaika Atiq ShahThe aim of study is to investigate the relationship between family environment, shame proneness, and academic competence among university students. A correlational study was conducted with a sample of N=370 university students, with an average age of 23 years (M=23.12, SD=4.13). The Urdu version of Family Cohesion Scale, which includes sub-scales for Family Communication and Family Satisfaction, was used to measure the family environment along with the Urdu version of the Guilt and Shame Proneness Scale was employed to assess shame proneness, and the Academic Competence Scale was used to evaluate academic competence. Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis indicated that all factors of the Family Cohesion Scale (Family Communication, Family Satisfaction) had a positive significant association with all factors of the Guilt and Shame Proneness Scale and the Academic Competence Scale. Regression analysis identified family communication and family satisfaction as positive predictors of academic competence. The results of t-test analysis showed that men had more family satisfaction than women and students of nuclear families had more family cohesion and academic competence as compared to joint families. Moreover, this research presents new potentials for investigating the correlation between home environment, susceptibility to shame, and academic proficiency, instigation the need for comparative studies encompassing a wide range of cultural contexts.
