Item A Marxist study of selected short stories by Munshi Premchand(UMT, Lahore, 2021) Aiman KhanThis thesis examines the selected short stories by Munshi Premchand through the lens of Marxism. The aim of this paper is to analyze the social, economic and financial crisis of South Asia in the 20 th century. A major population of South Asia faces severe economic issues and Munshi Premchand depicts the said issues in his literature. This paper, through the characters of Munshi Premchand‟s short stories, will explore the ways in which economic and financial crises, the discrimination faced by the people belonging to the lower castes and the ill treatment of society towards the poor, affect the lives of people. This paper investigates economic discrimination, poverty, social class and economic issues. The main objective is to analyze how the poor people in South Asia sacrifice, compromise, and struggle to survive under economic or financial issues. Moreover, under the vast umbrella of Marxism this paper touches other paradigms such as Feminism, Psychological analysis and the concept of „Subalterns‟ to highlight the social and economic discriminations among people. Women are marginalized in every space but the women who are poor are doubly marginalized by society. Poverty is a factor that changes the psyche of a person according to environmental treatment. The people who are poor are treated like slaves by society and they spend their life without raising voice for the rights. One of the major factors creating societies with poles apart from social statuses of people is the culture of capitalist landowners loading workers with maximum workload and minimum wages. They use the people of the working class for their benefits without giving them any rewards. This paper will explore the relationship between landowners and Dalits.
