Item Dystopian analysis of the selection by Kiera Cass(UMT, Lahore, 2021) Abid HussainThis paper intends to explore the elements of dystopia in the fictional country of Illea under the rule of royalty. The dystopian world in the novel shall be studies as an image of a flawed society which rules with injustice and oppression where the citizens are controlled by the government and abide by the rules laid out by the royals so freedom is non-existent for them. The country discriminates based on castes and suppresses the lower castes to a life of misery. This research highlights the miserable life of the lower castes predetermined due to their lower rank which sets the mood of dystopia in the novel The Selection. The concept of dystopia which has been presented by Keith Booker in his book shall be applied in this study over the horrible dystopia set by the government over the people based on the capabilities of their ancestors. The study shall highlight the errors in the working of the country and the totalitarian rule imposed upon the lower castes more than others. The paper uses the lens of dystopian impulse to scrutinize and elaborate the working mechanism that make a government unjust and oppressive. The study will apply the dystopian theory to highlight the practices of class discrimination, the circumstances that led to participation in the selection by the main character and the components of the dystopia in the novel.
