Item The dissertation of human psyche and personality in the novel the forty rules of love by Elif Shafak(UMT, Lahore, 2019) AFROZE ZAHRAThe Forty Rules of Love is a well-acclaimed post modern text with persistent themes of ordinary love and spiritual love. The story setting in the 12th century and the one in modern day integrate and together deploy the very theme of the novel, which is love. The novel gravitates to the philosophy of love from a spiritual point of and the story speaks to us across centuries and cultures. This polyphonic novel by Elif Shafak is potential of cultivating change in one’s school of thought about the restricted presumptions known to mere humans. Unbeknownst to the expertise of the characters of the novel, their force of personality changes with the accelerating events. Their worldviews are restyled. The psychoanalytical theory by Sigmund Freud claims that human mind is an intricate thing to examine and its psychological evolvement. This theory is dormant of enquiring human mind and psyche under varying conditions or circumstances. The characters of the novel also show mental alteration in the course of the novel. This research tends to apply psychoanalytical theory on the novel “Forty Rules of Love”. The predominant stimulation of this research is to delve into the psyche and disposition of the main characters of the novel. This research will examine that how Ella’s conflict between the heart and the mind brings her to face the truth that she is trapped in an unhappy marriage. Rumi is admired in his community but his union with Shams leads him beyond the comforts of his respectful life and beyond the shallow satisfactions of the ego. The exuberant experiences shapes both of them into whole new beings. Their changing psyche and personality will be explored with scrutiny through the lens of critic’s viewpoint and book references.
