Item A phenomenological inquiry into lived experiences of transgender students(UMT Lahore, 2022) Afira AslamThis phenomenological qualitative research study explored bullying experiences of the transgender students in educational institutes. For this purpose, five participants were selected through snowball sampling, who had minimum 16 years of education from different educational institutes across Pakistan. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and within case analysis was done. According to the findings, all of the transgender students identify their gender on contrary to the gender assigned at birth, which affected them adversely and they had to go through different experiences and issues as compared to cisgender students. Due to gender identity transgender students faced different types of bullying (verbal, non-verbal, physical; and sexual) at different places (classes or corridors, play grounds, washrooms, hostels; and social media or cyber space), which led to serious kind of consequences (suicide attempt, depression, hiding gender identity, missing school or classes; and others). They witnessed absence of any educational policy related to inclusivity, equity, diversity and indiscrimination at their institutes, especially till secondary education level. Moreover, there was least support or counseling available to them. It is suggested that there is dire need of formulating and implementing educational policy related to provide protection to the transgender students belonging to marginalized community in Pakistan. Besides, both teachers and students need training to sensitize them about transgender students to promote inclusivity, equity, diversity and indiscrimination.
